: LinkStation Live and Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Hy everybody

I just got a new LinkStation Live with 1TB Storage (LS-CH1.0TL). I wanted to set up time machine, but this didn't work: I set all the settings in the Webtool correct and was able to select the Time Machine Drive. But when I started the Backup it kicked me out after a minute or so saying it couldn't write a certain file (error 45). I have Mac OS X 10.6 (also known as Snow Leopard). Firmware of the drive is 1.07, I have no clue though whether it is a V1 or V2, NAS Navigator wont tell me even though I have Version 2.19. What should I do?

Another Question: Is it possible to back up a different computer (also Mac OS X 10.6) on the same drive too?

Thanks for your help, I'm starting to get annoyed with this thing, just spent more than an hour to get it to work.

Best, Garnele

By the firmware version you said you had it is a version 1.  You can back up multiple backups from diffrent PCs, you just cant have them going at the same time :smileywink:.

Firmware of the drive is 1.07, I have no clue though whether it is a V1or V2, NAS Navigator wont tell me even though I have Version 2.19.

Do you have 1.07 or 2.19?

Hi

Sorry for being slightly unclear: Firmware of the device is 1.07, the NAS Navigator Software has version 2.19.

So lets say I have a hardware version 1, does this mean I can't use Time Machine on my Mac for the update with OS 10.6? Or what would I need to do to make this possible?

Best, Garnele

Ok now if the GUI or Interface is Red then you have the V2.  If you have the GUI with the Yellow and Blue then its the V1.  V1 has the Time Machine Fuction so you should be able to use it.  Still looking into the Time Machine Problem.

Hi

Okay, I have V1 then, the GUI is blue. Would be great if you got Time Machine to work, might there be a problem due to the fact I use Mac OS X 10.6 and the LinkStation was developed under 10.5? According to Apple they have made quite some changes to Time Machine.

Please keep me updated, thanks!

Just as a stab in the dark, go ahead and reflash the firmware.  After you do that go to maintenance>initialization>restore.  It will restore it to defaults.  You wont have any data loss but you will lose your User Configurations.  See if that works.

I have just purchased a linkstation pro 2TB. It has firmware 1.10. I am running snow leopard. I am seeing the same problem.

1. I point time machine at the drive

2. After 15 min's it comes back with an error: "......machinename.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 45)

Interestingly, if I look on the drive there is a file created there with that name.

I was told in an email from Buffalo that they know there is this problem and the fixes so far are unstable. Any word yet from Buffalo when we frustrated users will have a patch?

Hi!

I had the same problems (error 45).

When I disabled wlan on my iMac and wired it via lan to my router everything works.

For wlan I used the macadress of the wlan interface in the linkstation web admin tool. --> error 45

For lan I used the macadress of the lan interface in the linkstation web admin tool. --> no problem

Maybe wlan works with the macadress of the lan interface.

I did not test this.

Regards!

If the Time machine won't work will the drive still be visible and fully working through Finder & iTunes etc ?

I don't use LinkStation for Time machine purpose (no RAID in my model...) so will I loose anything when upgrading from Leopard to Snow leopard? I do not use the Linkstation "tool" (NASNavigator) either, I only need the share to work and DLNA mediaserver too.

I can't compare the behavior under OS X 10.5 and 10.6, because I bought the LS after installing 10.6

What I can say is, that everything is running(file sharing, DLNA, iTunes, etc.) here except:

Time machine over wlan

Auto wake up

Finding the LS in the lan to install firmware 1.21

Regards.

Nice to know, thanks :). Now I can upgrade to 10.6.

Why doesn't some moderator from Buffalo post a reply to tell us all what we are doing wrong or when to expect a fix?

Ive managed to fix it!

I was using this guide : http://forums.buffalotech.com/buffalo/board/message?board.id=SolvedStorageThreads&thread.id=2777

And instead of creating it myself i logged into the linkstation live and entered the time machine section. Where it says mac id and host name i entered the details which i found from using the tutorial and the linkstation generated it itself and it just works now.

I generated two files, one with the top mac id that shows in terminal and one with the second. Im not sure which one its using right now but once the backup is complete ill drop by and edit to let you all know.

EDIT: Confirmed, it was the one with the second mac ID that worked. Give this a try and let me know if this works for you guys?

THIS WORKS!!  It is humming away backing up my MacBook with Snow Leopard 10.6.1 to the LinkStation Pro LS-HX1.0TL as I type this.  Kudos! I chose a 500G size so I still have lots of room for photos and picts on the remaining half of the drive.

I should add that I used the link http://forums.buffalotech.com/buffalo/board/message?board.id=SolvedStorageThreads&thread.id=2777 as is.

I also used the first mac id from ifconfig | grep ether since I am wired.

Exactly same problem here too.

linkstation live 1.10

mac os x 10.6.1

Getting error 45 with time machine and have tried manually creating the sparsebundle file as above. I'm connecting to the linkstation live wirelesslessly not through ethernet. Has anyone had any sucess running Time Machine over wireless connection? The people that have had sucess above seem to have got it plugged in on ethernet...

If this can help, I confirm that I have a LS-CH1.0 LiveStation under firmware 1.02 (the latest I found that installs with a Mac) and I have 2 macbooks (Snow Leopard) backing up wirelessly  to Time Machine.

But I must confess that it took me several days, one year ago to discover how to make it work, with almost no help from the tech support who did not know anything about the mac and even less about Time Machine :-(

Now, I just ran in a new problem which doesnt fit in this thread

would someone, with the error 45/sparse bundle error, please email screenshots to me or post screenshots here?

memoryman@buffalotech.com

List your OS revision and  Buffalo product/FW revision and whether you are wireless or wired.

This is a request from our engineers in Japan.

I have sent screen shots by PM.  I'm using Mac OSx 10.6.1 on a MacBook Pro, with wlan.  I have not tried lan connection, but my other computer, an iMac, also with 10.6.1, is also using wlan successfully on this same LinkStation Quad.

The LinkStation is new, model LS-QL 1TB, version 1.05 firmware.

Thank you for the screenshots - I forwarded them to our Japanese engineers. If anyone else would send screenshots - please send them to memoryman@buffalotech.com

The more shots - the better for the engineers in Japan to understand this issue and get it resolved quicker.

I have solved this problem in my case.  Apparently TimeMachine expects to see the MAC address of the wired ethernet port as part of the file name it uses for backup, even if the computer is not using wired ethernet (for example, using Airport wireless).

So you need to get the MAC address **bleep** Preferences, not the Airport section.

I think that a previous post in this thread actually expained that, but it took me a while to figure this out - my bad.

Hi Salij

This sounds intersting, yet I can't quite follow you. The ***bleep*** means what? And which preferences do you mean and where to find them?

Thanks a lot!

Best, Garnele

: Re: LinkStation Live and Mac OS X Snow Leopard
: sailj32 October 26, 2009, 05:25:44 PM

Interesting - my post seems to have been edited.  I did not type the ***bleep***.

When you go into network system preferences to obtain the MAC address for the backup file, you need to select 'Ethernet' not 'Airport' even if you are using wireless communication.

Hi,

I'm also trying to set up time machine to work with my Linkstation Quad LS-QL/R5. I also followed the instructions and was able to set up until when the Mac tries to set up the back up files but return with error 45 in the message.

Please help.

Thanks

Cheers

I am having the same issues.  I tried creating the sparse bundle myself with the instructions here: http://www.levelofindirection.com/journal/2009/10/10/using-a-networked-drive-for-time-machine-backups-on-a-mac.html but it did not solve the problem.  Apparently this is a common problem.  My MAC seems to be trying to create a temp sparsebundle that does not have the mac address in the name, I wonder if thats a dated requirement.

: chuahyen December 31, 2010, 08:26:46 PM

hi

i also just bought the LS-QL Link station.

And i am still having a hell of a time dealing in setting up the Time machine on it.

I have tried entering the target host name and mac address on the Time machine of the WebGUI and the <hostname>_<mac address>.sparsebundle was created in the time machine shared folder.

When i turned on the Time machine on the macbook,

It seems to be creating a <host>.tmp.sparsebundle on the time machine folder.

Afterwhich, the time machine on the macbook will return an error code 45.

Anyone managed to solve this problem?

please advise

This will solve everything:

http://www.jerzakie.com/post/Using-Time-Machine-with-a-Buffalo-LinkStation-%28CHCL-Series%29.aspx

I think the biggest error in the stupid buffalo manual is that it says enter your MAC address, people ofcourse thinking "Since I'm using wifi to connect, naturally I'll put in my wifi MAC" Wrong! It needs to be your Mac's LAN Mac address :)

Hope this helps, sure helped me getting my Time machine working.
