I've filled up the 500GB hard drive in my Linkstation HS-DH500GL and would like to put a 2TB drive in there? Can I do so? If so, after I replace the drive, what do I have to do to get the Linkstation to recognize the 2TB drive? I'd prefer not to use an external 2TB drive through the USB port on the back of the Linkstation. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
A drive that size has never been tested (to my knowledge). You can try but it is not something that we support and it would void your warranty. Also I have a feeling it will be a little tricky getting the firmware back onto the unit.
some seagates have a firmware problem drive side
though i think new ones are fixed now
i think there's a bug with 2tb wd greenpower's also
samsung f2 1.5tb works fine for sure
as the mod said it isnt supported by buffalo and you have to know what you are doing with a pc
I actually ended up getting a 1.5TB Samsung hard drive (HD154UI) on deal from Newegg for $99. Can't beat that.
I took out the 500GB drive from the Linkstation (warranty was up some time ago) and put in the 1.5TB Samsung. I turned on the Linkstation and got the 6 flash/beep message indicating the Linkstation does not recognize the hard drive. I then connected the Linkstation directly to my laptop via the ethernet cable and tried to force install the firmware but the LSupdater software could not find the Linkstation.
Any help as to how to get LSupdater and/or the Linkstation to see the new hard drive would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
The only two solutions are either booting it into EM mode AND then force flashing the firmware or doing the TFTP boot procedure (not sure if a TFTP exisists). This is the trickier part, I wish you the best of luck. If you have any questions about the two procedures let me know (they are stickied at the top of the main storage page)
I will try and explain it in a simple way
say you removed your hard drive from your pc
and fitted a brand new one
it wouldnt boot into windows
would it
the easiest way to fix it is to clone partition 1 and 2 from the old drive onto the new one
with a pc it will then boot but the partitions will be missing
you can then do a debug firmware update with rebuild partitions enabled
dont mess with the old drive in any way as you always have a backup drive that works then
Hi Shonk
I try to minize the risk to have a non comaptible hd.
Is the following reference the one you ahve used ?
SAMSUNG EcoGreen F2 - 1.5 To (1500 Go) - SATA II - 32 Mo cache
I am just affraid about the ECOGREEN as you mentionned in an other topic it could be problematic.
Thanks in advance.
Yes that drive is fine
its ecogreen as it spins at 5400 rpm :smileysurprised:
Thanks
So, did you ever got it to work? I am wanting to do the same. Thanks.
Yes, It works... Having some bad time but finally I did it...thanks to all guys that share the information adn provide the support.
I had to copy the partitions to get it work. Update with Fw 2.28
I used the 1,5T SAMSUNG F2EG Ref HD154UI
Regards.
Fw 2.28 ?
I thought the latest firmware for the HS-DHGL was 2.11 beta ?
You are right for the "Official "Fw taht is 2.11.
Check LS-DHGL_FW_228-shmod8.rar prepared by Stevie Wonder at this link
It works fine and add few interesting functionalities...
I am just using this Fw and take this opportunity to thanks and congratulate all those guys that spend some times and share their works...
Regards
RMEA, glad you got it working but please do not give links to 3rd party firmware. Customers may update their firmware and void their warranty not knowing what they are doing (probably not with this thread but still...) I am removing the link from your post
Sorry for that, for sure Mine is out of warranty.
One further question : are XFS partitions readable through the USB connection? In other term and to be more accurate on my need, if I connect the old 500G HDD (through a USB/SATA interface) to the linkstation, would I be able to see the data and restore it on the new 1,5T HDD?
Thanks
No way to reach the XFS partition, it seems that the USB port can see only the first partition of the USB HDD. In this case it is the first one that contains the firmware. I put this information in case someone is interested .
I got it to work this weekend:
1. Place the new harddrive (Samsung HD154UI SpinPoint 1.5TB) in my LinkStation HS DH320GL
2. Connect the station to my computer, where the computer LAN is configured with IP 192.168.11.1
3. Run the tftp service
4. Start the linstation. It will now boot using the tftp service
5. Run the Firmware updater, version 2.11
6. Be patient.... and all done.
Interesting... did you do anything to the drive before you installed it into your NAS enclosure? i.e was it a clean drive, or did you re-create the partitions as suggested above?
(I'm hoping to replace my HDD)
Thanks
The only issues that ive seen is with WD Caviar Green Drives.
