Somehow the messages about updating firmware on WHR-G300N WLAN router got deleted.
Where did they went and why?
yeah, this is really not good that admin is started to delete all post about problems with this router. We are still waithing for the new updated firmware, becouse a lot of users of this routers have a problems with wifi stability and speed. If this act of admin will continue we are post this problems in others forums and this will not be good for Buffalo product at all,I think it's more better to release and improve this firmware really soon!
I got a reply from Buffalo that the Buffalo tech is waiting for the firmware from Japan.
I just wish Tomato will come out before Buffalo. Otherwise, my WHR-G300N will stay with my 4 other Buffalo routers under my desk.
One reason the Buffalo cannot use dd-wrt in USA according to:
Buffalo can't officially endorse using DD-WRT because "the power modes it allows lets you go beyond the levels allowed by the FCC." as senior marketing manager Oliver Kaven told PC Mag. In Europe, Buffalo sells a version of this router branded as DD-WRT ready, because there is no restriction. This hardware is ready to have its firmware flashed to open-source, endorsed or not.
Just wait for the new firmware send from the Japan Buffalo.
and when this firmware will be available, because I am almost giving up on waiting?
I got tired of waiting for this firmware and my roter got ''wings'' ----> trash.
I'm very sorry Buffalo, but your support for this router, sorry to say, sucks

All of our moderators are fully trained technical support reps. When a problem comes up that cannot be solved by troubleshooting, and we identify that it is a problem with the firmware, there is nothing our support team can do besides make the problem known to our corporate office, who then work towards implementing the fix in a forthcoming firmware update.
Software development takes time. This is an unfortunate fact of the industry. It is also VERY hard to predict how long the problem will take to be resolved, due to the nature of the development process. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused any of you, and assure you that we are working on the problem as fast as possible.
Again, please be sure to conform to the user guidelines; breaches of the guidelines will result in your username or IP address being banned.
I'm eagerly awaiting this firmware update too. The QoS options are way too basic, hope they add download QoS and options to prioritise devices by MAC or IP, it would be perfect then.
I hope it will be posted on the european website as soon as the US website.

I think I found a bug with the Client Monitor/DHCP Lease pages. Sometimes on the Client Monitor Page doesn't show the lease IP address and hostname but it does show the MAC and communication method and so at the same time it doesn't show that lease on the DHCP leases page unless it's a static one. The device that got the lease works fine and gets the proper IP from DHCP but annoying to see the Client Monitor/DHCP lease with some info missing. Can you pass this on to someone to get it fixed? Version 1.60 (and bought from the UK).
Thanks Aveyer, will pass that along.
Slpip the fact that you had to enable QOS for a VOIP client to work properly doesn't surprise me, wouldn't even consider that a bug, there wasn't even any port forwarding neccessary, but we'll pass it along regardless.
Another Update:
After even more testing I think I found what's causing it and dunno if it's really a bug with the firmware. If I have a PC connected which has gotten an IP via DHCP from the router (let's say 192.168.2.4) then I reboot the router without plugging out the ethernet cables or the PC, then when the router is booted up again it sees there is a client connected but doesn't have info on it since the PC got the IP (and has the same IP) before the router reboot and doesn't show the lease since it didn't grant any leases after reboot.I have my PC firstly connected to a switch which is then connected to the router so the LAN connection on the PC stays up(doesn't disconnect) and thus doesn't refresh(or get a new lease).
You are correct. I figured you rebooted it from the interface, since if you powercycled it, the computer would detect the loss of connection and request a new lease. Just wanted to make sure :)
Aha, I didn't catch that part of your previous post. Rebooting from the interface does reset the onboard switch, but that doesn't happen on some of the older routers, hence my confusion.
That's one less thing on my mind now :smileyhappy:. Just hope Buffalo post the latest firmware soon.
Thanks anyway.
Is anybody interested in firmware anymore?
This is the firmware available so far (maybe)

I'm trying to install the english firmware as well and it wont work.
Hmm... any suggestions?
will someone acknowledge the fact that the firmware download is borked?
timetable on fixing this? I am having problems on a new install and want to try a firmware upgrade before I return this product.
ACGalaga,
This is the same problem I'm having.
Considering the level of Buffalo staff in this forum, I can give a suggestion: forget about a firmware update.
We are waiting for the new updated version since February and the only thing we got so far is an older version that doesn't even work.
Use the ruter as it is or return/waste it.
Just wanted to throw my hat into this ring. After reading this thread it seems that many people have been suffering for a long time with this product. I am fairly new to the WHR-G300N having only purchased mine 1 month ago. I did read a number of reviews some of which talked about problems with the firmware but having used buffalo in the past, they always seemed reliable.
So after 1 month using this router my opinion is as follows .... I accept that any pc related hardware has the potential of compatibility issues but I also can’t remember the last time I used a wifi router that simply fell over every time I tried to transfer large files. Considering buffalo go to the extent of advertising it with the description 'Perfect for streaming HD movies, music, and e-mailing from multiple PC’s simultaneously.', I find it hard to believe it can be this unstable. It also occasionally decides to simple lock up.
A true test of a good company is how quickly they can respond to a problem of this nature and from what i've been reading here in this forum its not looking good for us WHR-300N users. No company is perfect and yes it is impossible to test for every possible hardware configuration but how can it be so off the mark and why are users having to wait so long for a fix.
I think it’s very important that buffalo support come back with some real timelines and definitive answers to how this product is going to be made usable by its customers
Looking forward to your response buffalo support
shimsim,
I'd like to give you a timeline... I really would. It would make many of our customers feel better. Unfortunately though, a timeline simply isn't reasonable for me to expect. We'd much rather simply release a fix when it's ready, instead of providing an inaccurate timeline that would probably be wrong. It takes time to test for, debug, patch, post test, and repackage the fix for a particular issue. Sometimes it's quick, but sometimes not.
Thank you for your reply, i appreciate that it would be irresponsible to commit to a timescale when you don’t have one. At this point what’s important for me (and I suspect other users) is to be assured that the problem is being given the appropriate level of attention and that this model is not brushed under the carpet (so to speak) leaving those who purchased it without a solution other than cutting their losses by dumping it or resorting to third party firmware at their own risk.
So whilst you are unable to give a definite timescale, can you confirm that an updated firmware is in the pipeline and that it is being given some development priority?
Dear Colin37
- You published a firmware with wrong version (1,06) number several month ago and this is not fixed yet
- The firmware itself doesn't work, and you were not even able to remove from the web site
- Some people are asking for the old firmware, that has been already tested, post-tested, etc. Nothing there yet.
- In Japan they released the new version of the firware 1.61 in February
- In June they released another version 1.63 with other couple of fixed
You are talking about time for "debug, patch, post test, and repackage the fix". I don't think this has nothing to do with the issue above, except the last one maybe.
I think there is something else here, something weird, don't you think so?
Regards

- The version is correct on the firmware itself, just not on the website. I'll let the webmaster know to fix that.
- We published the US firmware for it, and it DOES work. The reason it didn't work for you is because you purchased your router in Japan... the Japanese firmware will not accept the US firmware update.
I just bought WHR-G300N with firmware version 1.6.
All same problems as other writers are reporting.
It is extremely frustrating to see neigbor's D-Link giving steady and good signal, when my Buffalo is not able to keep steady signal from one room to other (I can seen the router from where I am sitting). Signal is strong for a while then it drops and finally no signal. I could do better using neighbor's D-Link for internet.
Now I am using WHR-G300N just for handling PPPoE connection and Apple Airport Extreme for wireless. (ironically I planned to swap Apple with "more professional" network gear; haha). Well, still Internet connection goes down time to time, but better than with Apple but worse than my 5 years old D-Link.
But big thanks for giving English interface, even I bought the equipment from my local computer mall in China. That fact was one of the important selection criterias over D-link and TP-link. Please give me also channels 12 and 13...
When the firmware update is coming?????
@ Mods/Admins, is there any difference between the firmware of EU/Japanese/Chinese and US models besides the language?
I've brutally tested my router (EU) with transfer rates as high as 11MB/s without problems.
Just a small update on the issues I have been having when transferring large files or streaming media, fully disabling WMM has greatly reduced the frequency of lock-ups. I still get the occasional hang but compared to how bad it was before its a step in the right direction.
hope that helps anyone else with this problem.
ps any news on firmware???
another month another try .... update please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guys,
Here's what I found.
When you actually pair up your WHR-G300N using WPS (that AOSS button is useful) with your client dongle or system that actually a client WPS button, the result is amazing. Right now, it is working perfectly. Transfers are fast and stable, doesn't lock up and I get 300mbps RX/150mbps TX with my Comstar N USB dongle using a Realtek chip. And yes, I did a HD stream from my NAS and it works perfectly as well as a 5GB file transfer from my NAS as full speed -- very fast!
I did not need to disable WMM -- everything stock and working great. The only downside is that, only 1 device can log on to the router, because if you set up a second SSID (SSID 2) with any security, it will lock up the router unless you set it to OPEN. I haven't tried WEP yet, but because it has WEP key installed on my router, I'll will try that.
This is not something new. Linksys did this to me with their WRT-54G versin 6.0 and it took about 1.2 years to get the wireless security thing working right. 2 years later, the unit is now working as it should be. Hopefully, it won't take Buffalo that long to get this sorted out.
Rick.
Cheers for the info will give it a go but it wont really help as i have more than one device :(
Any update on the firmware buffalo ?
FW version 1.64 for the WHR-G300N is now on the download site in the US.
Post it on the UK site too please?
EDIT: Nevermind, just noticed it is already. Glad to see Buffalo are speeding up with the firmware updates.
wow windows 7 and new firmware on the same day ... i feel so spoilt ... lets hope it makes this router stable now :p
The router with the new firmware seemed to be running fine now, being able to serve at least 3 WIFI devices simultaneously without locking up. Let's hope this continues on!
Just got this router, expecting it to be reliable - whoops! should have come to this forum and checked it out first!
I've upgraded to the 1.64 firmware, but I'm still getting a drop outs with my wireless connection. It seems that the connection is solid and working fine, and then the signal drops from 54 Mbps to 24 Mbps and the connection is lost.
Pretty disappointing and unless I'm missing something obvious this is going back with zero stars!
Try changing the wireless channel? interference can cause problems like that.
Since upgrading to v1.64 i have noticed no improvement with the problem I originally posted here. If I transfer large files the router locks up and restarts. As and end user who has been waiting 5 months for a fix what am i really supposed to do at this point? Wait another 5 months?
this isnt looking promising - been trying different channels and am still having these drop outs.
Pixel_Paul what do you see in the log shortly after you get a drop out? ('Diagnostics'...'Log')
Well, I thought firmware 1.64 fixed my drop connections with a different interference free channel and NAT option turned off, but it is still dropping connections when transferring large files. When it does, it drops bandwidth first and then looses the gateway information and the router just locks up. It has a hard time determining gateway information even when it's like sitting and connected to my main DLINK router (8 seconds!!). It's funny that my Linksys WRT-54G obtained gateway much much faster like less than a second than the WHR-G300N when it is plugged into the WHR-G300N and not into the DLINK. So recently, I just hooked my netbook up directly back to LAN instead. Hopefully Buffalo tech is working hard to resolve this problem.
Next time I have the time to debug the problem I'll post up the log.
Ok - so i have found some time troubleshoot this.
I have a laptop and iphone connecting wirelessly and a desktop through a cable. The iphone and the desktop don't have any problems connecting.
The laptop has an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 BG adapter.
Tha laptop does however - it works for about one web page, then you get connection time outs and the speed falls to 24Mbps, although signal strength is 'Excellent'. Leave it a few minutes and it works for a very short time, then it falls to 24 Mbps and connection timeout happens again.
I can ping the laptop fine from the router.

can anyone kindly help me as to solve my problem with always getting an Unidentified Network problem with my laptop? my mom's laptop also encounters the problem but the internet on my desktop is working just fine..can anyone help thanks so much!
i managed to solve this problem by upgrading the drivers for the Intel PROSet 2200 device from the Intel website
No drop offs anymore :)
Dear Buffalo Tech Support,
I originally joined the forum in August of last year having recently purchased a WHR-G300N. Not soon after setting it up, it became apparent that the router suffers from drop offs, in my situation whenever i attempt to transfer large files over wifi. This was not limited to one wifi card or driver but any combination of hardware used in conjunction with the router. V1.64 firmware after much delay in release has done very little to solve the problem.
Can i now safely assume that this product is never going to work properly for me and consider moving on?
Is anyone at Buffalo aware of these problems and still actively trying to resolve it?
I don't really want to make reactive comments like 'i will never buy buffalo again' but to say this experience has left me somewhat cautions about buffalo products and support would be an understatement. You don't have to look too far to see examples of other companies handling faults with products once they are already out in the field (e.g. toyota and their recent accelerator/braking problem) and whats very clear about good customer service is honest, open and up front communication, a proactive approach not reactive. I cant say whats been happening behind closed doors at Buffalo but my experience of this situation makes me question if anything is being done at all.
However you want to look at it or justify it, bottom line, i purchased a product that did not work correctly from day one and have been given little assurance or hope for a solution.
If anyone from Buffalo can shed some further light on this i would of course appreciate it but my sentiments stand, this has been a truly disappointing customer service experience.
Not that anyone still cares judging by the response on this forum but the new firmware 1.65 still suffers from drop outs when transferring large files. it is marginally more stable but at the end of the day this router is still unusable and has nothing short of a total waste of time and money.
thanks!
So now that Buffalo itself has started officially using DD-WRT (http://www.buffalotech.com/press/releases/buffalo-and-dd-wrt-collaborate-to-create-the-most-comprehensive-consumer-and-small-business-wireless-offering/)
how about giving some native support to other routers, like this troubled G300N .... because lets face it ... the stock firmware just does not work
we already know that is will run on this router (if you check with dd-wrt) but for those of us that done want to mess around trying to flash it .... how about giving us an official firmware option using dd-wrt ?
One of the challenges in making an N wireless product is the fact that it has to operate in a congested WIFI topology while maintaining ever higher speeds (faster than 11b/g), meaning that because WIFI is so popular and almost every household owns at least 1 to like 5 APs, you are going to expect some sort of interference from legacy and older draft 11n products that people are still using!
It all has to do with CCA (Clear Channel Assessment). The final draft 2.0 n espouses the "do no harm" policy. Meaning that, if the access point detects a channel being used by some other legacy products, it will yield using it until that channel clears. Lacking any sort of standards in the older draft implementation, every vendor can implement whatever they think is the appropriate CCA action, sometimes to a point of kicking your AP out completely; thus loosing your connection to your access point. If you want n speed, this is what you have to put up with, especially if you have a single 2.4Ghz band. If you live in a congested WIFI area, then plan on buying the more expensive dual band n version; you need to pay double or triple the price what you paid for this one in order to work perfectly. Or you can opt for an assertive do no harm kind of certified draft 2.0n router that won't loose your connection, but grind to a very very slow xfer speed until such time that the channel it needs to use to achieve faster speeds is available again! Which is why I still have a WRT-54G router modified for extended range. I finally figured out that some routers in my area are non-draft 2.0, but running draft 1.0 and are quite aggressive in their channel selections and interferences resulted in dropped VNC connections as well as large file transfers. Unless you live in a very traffic free 2.4Ghz frequency spectrum, this is what you need to expect. I know of other brands of N products suffer the same fate, unless they can operate in the 5Ghz range and you know you don't have a lot of traffic in that spectrum range.
Which is also why that in many sanctioned events like the recent Winter Olympics that they mandated no one should be operating their OWN hotspot on b/g/n 2.4Ghz spectrum. Fine with 11a which btw operates at the 5Ghz spectrum which will not interfere with their regulated official frequencies.
DT.
that may be the case, but i am living in China on the 22nd floor of an apartment complex with no other wifi AP's in the area .... on the odd occasion when you do come across another AP, it will almost certainly be G and not N because there is not much choice out here for N AP's
sorry to say this but a more likely cause for the problem is Buffalo making a crap product
There doesn't have to be another N AP to interfere with you, anything that uses 2.4ghz (baby monitors and cordless phones too etc) will cause interference.
i guess if you saw where i live it would be easier for you to appreciate just how little interference there is likely to be ..... its a very 'low tech' area :p
i didnt really want to mention it just in case the admin decide to cut my post ... but i did find a stable solution for this router ... i tried dd-wrt firmware .... its the difference between day and night ....
so my theory still stands ... :smileywink:

1.81 for a few models, so in a few years, maybe there'll be an english version ...
in a few years maybe .... and an even bigger maybe that it will fix any of the problems :smileytongue:
Wow!!!
I was surprised to heard so much negative thoughts about the WHR-300N and Buffalo in general, as a matter of fact, I have been using WHR300N for close to a year and to tell you frankly, I think it is a very good and efficient router.
I am not an expert in wireless router....I just used the router for wireless and wired feature to surf the net and download some. So far, it has not failed me. I lived in a average sized apartment, and due to the limted space, I placed the WHR300N under my table in my study wired to a PC and another 2 notebooks around the apartment runnign with wireless features.
The wireless was able to give Excellent and Very Good range (according to the http://tools.meraki.com/stumbler). I have friends that came to my home and was surprised to see my router stack under the table....they told me that their router could not even come closed to what the WHR300Nhas given me.
Out of fun, I purchased another wireless router (NetGear 200N), it was not able to give such good range and their service was in my opinion worst than Buffalo Tech. I was glad to gave it away and keep my WHR300N.
Anyway, I am here to give my frank opinion and feedback. Thank you for your time and Good Luck.
talking to myself here.
strings on the 1.73 for the G301 shows:
WZR-HP-G300NH
WZR-HP-G300NH
1.73
3.01
start
and then presumably its compressed 20mb worth of garbage.
Well, I've a WHR-G301N, which has an Japanese firmware 1.70
Anybody knows, can I use English firmware for WHR-G301NV2 ?
I suggest, that it's the same router, but it has a different name for Japanese and American/European market (respectively, G301N for Japan and G300NV2 for Europe)
Please help if you know, because in case if my suggestion is wrong, I'll probably have troubles with it.
Thank you!
V2 usually means Version 2 is probably a hardware change - -Japan hardware, especially wireless, is often different than USA and Europe hardware, even with the same part number.
when firmware would be fot whr-g300nv2-eu to download ? Just in buffalo asia are, for EU or USA - none
http://www.buffalo-technology.com/support/downloads/ has the EU downloads. Doesn't look like they have new FW yet.
I'll ask Japan to send 1.81 in english, but just because it has the same part number, doesn't mean the hardware is the same. If the HW is different, the FW won't work on US and UK models.
After upgrade from 1.80 to 1.82 wireless speed don't up to 150 Mb/s
On 1.80 wireless speed was 300 Mb/s. Always.
My router is whr-g300nv2, My wifi card is Intel 6200
Router and wifi card bought in Hong Kong

Returned to 1.80
Sorry I posted in wrong thread. You can delete my post.

Now that sucks, it basically cannot handle HD movies like 6GB, FAT only supports up to 4GB and XFS is not supported either by Windows or Mac....
Not sure how developers didn't have this in mind.
I am considering returning this product, as all high-end features I paid for goes to waste...
Any possibility to see this fixed in near feature?
The WHR-G300N doesnt have a USB port so i dont know what you are talking about!
