The manual doesn't mention using any storage drive from elsewhere, just that you can make backups to other tera/linkstations.

Depends on the Terastation.

The 4400 can only back up to another tera/Linkstation, any USB disk or to Dropbox or Amazon s3.

The 5010/3010 series can back up to a different manufacturer's Nas using rsync.
