Hi,
I just setup a linkstation Mini.
I wasn't able to use the agent that never see any Nas on the lan. Stange because afaik, there's no more Firewall on the pc...
Anyway, the web mode is ok and i use it fine, add some permanent attachement thru smb, etc untill I tried to plays 'media server' to get music files on my PS3.
The Nas is seen, but it display no files.
I copy a lot of folders and various music files (mp3, wma and wav) into the Nas /share folder under a subfolder /music I created
The ps3 display all sub folders (mostly folders are artists's name) but there's nothing to play, no files are listed.
Any clue ?

UPDATE: I'm a n00b, was trying to play MP3s from within the Video tab on the PS3. Switched to MP3, tried one or two times, then the file played just fine...occasional "file type not supported" error even though trying again would work. Meh...can only get better from here I would suppose. :-)
I have the same problem.
My PS3 recognizes my Link Station Mini, and it displays all of the subfolders within the music folder that I created as a shared folder on the LS Mini, but there are "no titles" or playable files within these folders. Browing from a PC, however, MP3s are stored in all of these folders and play perfectly over the network.
Is there something that can be changes in the PS3 or on the LS Mini to allow for the MP3 files within each of the subfolders to be seen/played?

There was another thread on this exact issue whcih has been temporarily removed by the moderator, pending a response from "corporate".
I have also contacted the DLNA association and they report that this is a known incompatibility that is under investigation. I asked why these devices are being listed on their site as compatible when they clearly are not compatible. In the removed thread I had postulated that if the incompatibility is on the BUFFALO side, then they should not be advertising their products as compatible with all DLNA-certified devices.
Rumor has it that a firmware is in the works that will fix this issue, but it has been over a year since the last firmware.... Here is hoping for a reasonable response from corporate to this issue which, likely, will only get more press until resolved.

Thanks for the info, I have had mine for over a year and indeed looked into the dlna compat between all of it, I purchased a home plug and a switch to help keep the nas separate and out the way, spent hours trying to get it working one day it would find 25 of the thousands of mp3 then it won't find any, now it doesn't find any file, photo, mp3 vid nothing at all. to say in invested a lot of time and money would be an understatement. Where I work we sell these units and I have had some direct link with Buffalo, but even with this no resolve.
I can't get a refund but I know of other devices that do work, but am stuck with the linkstation live.
I do think the unit itself is good and every part of it works well until you come to ps3.
If it's run via a pc it works well, but then what is the point of the nas, and the network traffic is silly. Pulling info from the nas to a pc then to the ps3.
I do hope for some good outcome in the not so distant future.

This is interresting. You'll probaly be 'happy' to know I bought it 2 weeks ago (when I initiated this thread) when this product line was just being released in France. The dlna marketing is going on here (Tv, external HD and many other homme devices for Xmas...), believe me.
So are not we far from somekind of 'swindle' ? The use of official label is not regulated in U.S ??

I did not bought the link station mini especially for dlna anyway, but taking in account the poor software bundle (memobackup DEMO 30days) and now the pseudo dlna compatibilty, this was maybe not the best buy I was expected..

I'd consider the fact that DLNA doesn’t work properly to be fraud with how long this is taking to fix. A year since the last FW? I work for an NAS appliance vendor and it doesn't take this long to get FW fixes out. We don't need Buffalo to reinvent the wheel here, just fix the darn DLNA support, and maybe some of those other untested foul-ups. It should NOT be advertised in any way if it does not work. Mine hasn't worked since I bought it. I am running a 120 day trial of Windows Home Server and it DOES work with the PS3.
Come on Buffalo, lets get your act together...Don't ruin your rep over this. Bad news travels fast..

OK been playing around with a new linkstation live 1tb with PS3 60GB and have found a temporary workaround for missing content issue on the PS3.
First you need to refresh the linkstation database
1. Create a new share on the linkstation (keep this share empty)
2. Disable the media server and then point it to the new empty share, tag reinitialize the database and select refresh now.
3. When server comes back up check on the PS3 that all content has been removed (3-5 mins).
Now to get the content back
4. Disable the media server and point it back to your original share (ie where your media files are located)
5. Tag reinitialize database, and select refresh now, but also change the refresh interval to 600 from the default.
6. Now wait for several hours. I have alot of media files (around 400gb of .mp3, jpg, mpg) and it took overnight to refresh the database fully). Note you will need to ensure that the power switch is set to on and not auto during this process.
After three days of messing around I managed to get all of my content on the PS3. Hope this works for others.

Yes Lewis, I've also done that. It works part of the time. It's also very touchy and at at one point it corrupted my FW and I had to reload.

I posted to a thread on this forum expressing the same concerns for possible fraud. That thread has been taken down by the moderator. I have screen shots of the posts, though.
The moderator has indicated some response from corporate by mid-December. That's M/T of next week, BTW. If there is a response by then, this may all be water under the bridge. If not, it is certainly easy enough to proceed to the next step and determine whether accusation of fraud is accurate.
The real question, I imagine, is how many Linkstation Lives have been sold by Buffalo?

Weel, you can add me to this list, I have been coming to this site for a while to look for new drivers and still no luck. Like others I bought the 500Gb Linkstation Live becuase of its claim of full DLNA compatibility. Like others I trusted the claim, and like others I have come across all the issues. My had been working fine for a while. I then had to rebuilt my PC, and I think since then, even if I want to see my drive on the PS3, I have to do a refresh, otherwise it is not visible on my network.
Recently, in trying to fix that, I have somehow got into the predicament that it no longer displays anything on my PS3, just the folders etc, but no media at all.
This needs to get fixed, otherwise why are Buffalo not offering money back.
Paul, I am assuming you work for Buffalo, based on your posts, I appreciate the updates, however, I think everyone hear deserves more info and quicker turnaround from Buffalo. It just seems that the company is not concerned with losing customers, as I definitely will look at other products in the future when buying drives, and I will be looking over the next few weeks anyhow.
Lets gets this fixed, wouldn't this be a good Xmas present for all concerned.

Hello All,
I just bought the LinkStation Live (LS-CHL) F/W 1.00 because of the DLNA Certified claim, and at first I had the same issues like everyone else. I am using gaming consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3) as my DLNA players. At first both systems sees the media servers but not the files. But after I updated the firmware of the LS-CHL from 1.00.023 to 1.01.043, it works like a champ. Able to stream videos on both consoles. I even played the same video on both consoles at the same time and the NAS can handle the data transfer to both consoles via wifi "g".
After I installed the software, I logged on the Web Admin Page to configure the NAS. Just to check if the media server services is enabled, and disabled services that I'm not using (ie print server, appletalk, etc). Make sure the folder that is being shared by the media server is the location you are dumping your data on.

have you tried this page of discontinued products, it directs you to the available downloads of each individual device. ie hd-dh400gl replaced by hd-dh500gl, try using the f/w of the replacement.

My Buffalo LinkStation (HS-DH1000GL) NAS box (ver 2.10 firmware) is having trouble inter-working with my D-Link DSM-520 media player. The DSM works fine with the
Tversity media server installed on my PC.
My NAS box has a bunch of media files but these aren't visible on the
DSM; it still shows only some sample media files that I had copied as
test when I first installed the NAS box a month back. Since then, I've copied
several new media files and gone into the admin menu and refreshed the media
list but these don't show up on the DSM.
My PC is the master repository and the DSM can always see the latest media list from the PC.
Going through this thread, it appears that I am not missing some config step on the LinkStation. Buffalo needs to post a fix __quickly__ or else there are a lot of angry and frustrated customers like myself who've bought the box because it claims to be DLNA-compliant.

Thank you for your continued support on this forum. I have owned an LSLive500gb since July. I have been continually reading this forum and checking to see if there is a fix for this DLNA to PS3 issue. I understand that you are doing your job and again, thank you for that. Please direct some senior manager or decision-maker to this post so they can read it.
One of my best friends is a writer/reviewer for a MAJOR technology magazine. Obviously, I shouldn't mention which one specifically so please don't ask, but I assure you, tens of thousands of people read it, ALL of them potential Buffalo customers for your NAS products. I just got off the phone with my buddy, and he has agreed to review one of the Linkstation products some time in the first quarter of 2009. If this issue is not resolved by the time he submts said review, he is going to BLAST Buffalo and this product line quite ferociously. It is wrong to advertise these devices as being DLNA compatible when in fact they are not. Making customers wait for almost a YEAR for compliance to this is RIDICULOUS.
Buffalo has alway seemed to be a great company with great products, giving consumers a very usable alternative to all the junk on the market from companies like WesternDigital. Don't let this reputation be soiled. All it takes is a salary for one programmer to sit with this firmware and re-write it for the DLNA compatibility. How is that not worth it to please all of your loyal customers?? Added bonus: if there is a fix, that can be advertised and word will spread on these forums that the Linkstation family works with the PS3 and they will sell like hotcakes!
I realize that you aren't the guy writing the firmware, so please pass this along to someone who will read it and act upon it.

Just to add, I bought my 1tb Linkstation Live in Jan 08, the streaming to ps3 function has never worked properly. other programs like tversity fix it but this means that i am halving my bandwidth as it has to go to a server then back
i.e PS3 -> server -> LSL -> server -> ps3
instead of just LSL to PS3.
its crap and it needs fixing, i know there is a 2.16fw which has been out months which was never released to the public.
fix this issue or you could find yourself with a class action lawsuit against you.
all we want is a DLNA client that works, even if it means a free concessionary license for twonky (like on other buffalo products) to get these things working

Again thank you Paul for hanging in this forum and giving some hope to still existing "Buffalo fans".
I have had my LSL500 from the first early days when it came to market and I was very thrilled to by this dlna device (not PC) to give media files to my Nokia N95 as it is supporting dlna too. So, after a long period of not believing that LSL would not be 100% dlna device my good feelings towards Buffalo started to gray down. I also have bought the first version of AirStation WBR-G54 and an still using it! I have also got many of my frieds to buy AirStations and some also bought the LSL for getting dlna spinning around their homes... but then I started to hear their side of experiences with PS3... not so nice to her as I had said that Buffalo is the best!
Now this Christmas I bought the PS3 too and at the moment I'm pulling my hair to get even some media files through to my PS3... well, just gues how succesfull I have been? ... not even single file comes through. I hoped to get some files through as I managed to get to My Nokia N95 once.
So, I really hope that this message goes as top as it can and the new firmaware would be out before I go back to office after this Christmas break.
Don't let us down Buffalo!

Spent a long time reading up on products ahead of purchasing a DNLA compliant NAS for my PS3. Buffalo's DNLA server is created by PacketVideo and is based on a product from TwonkyMedia, a german company it aquired a few years back. The slowness of Buffalo to deliver a fix for these issues is probably due to having to wait for a thirdparty supplier (Packetvideo) to sort out the issue and supply a new firmware update.
PacketVideo (ala twonkymedia) supply this DLNA server technology to a number of vendors so i would guess Buffalo need to just take a ticket and wait. Unfortunetly, these forums make a prespective customer wary of buying kit that claims to provide a streaming source for the ps3 that clearly does not work very well - based on the number of complaints in this forum and reviews.
Anyway, i dont think Buffalo products are alone in this situtation and based on the price of the Linkstation - it seems like a pretty good investment. Alsothe last version of Twonkymediia (v5) actually does work very well with the PS3 so by logical conclusion - It will finally get implemented in the linkstation range.

Just got a Linksys mini for christmas and only now finding out about this DLNA business. It's a load of false advertising! I can't get anything but buffalo's DLNA clients to properly connect. I too have been a faithful buffalo client with WPA-G54's and others still operating. I have previously recommended your products BUT am serously reconsidering. If you want to wear the DLNA badge you gotta play by the rules...quit messing around before someone decides to start a lawsuit.

Hi, I have a Linkstation Live 1tb (LS-CH1.0TL-EU). I have it connected wirelessly via a 54mbps router to my PS3. When I originally bought the Live, it connected fine and was able to stream music and video to the PS3 without any problems.
Seemingly out of the blue, I now turn on my PS3 to see approximately every 10 seconds, my PS3 show a DLNA error, and that it has been 'disconnected from the media server'. The Live immediately re-connects, and I am able to browse its folders without problems, but for only 10 seconds at a time!
The DLNA errors that the PS3 states vary between several, but the end result is always the same. This is particularly frustrating because the Live did work perfectly, but now cannot be used for its intended purpose.
Buffalo Tech Support suggested fixing the Live's IP address and refreshing the Media Database - which I have done, but this did nothing unfortunately.
Can anyone else help with my problem?

You're having the same DLNA issue as the rest of us. The firmware Buffalo has for these things SUCKS. It is totally conflicting with the PS3. The only thing we can do is sit back and hope they remedy it.

we invite all customers with DLNA issues to post screenshots/firmware rev, and hardware. We'll gather the info in the US, and the info will assist in making faster firmware updates for DLNA. DLNA is constantly evolving with new versions and requires constant updates on all vendor's equipment.
Please post as much information as possible,

I like the fact that if you read the post priors to Xmas, the firmware was imminent, and it was any day now that we would get the good news. The latest request seems to be saying, did someone say something out there? Can you tell us whats wrong? Does this mean that for the last year as people have complained, no one has even looked at this? As for changing standards for DLNA, I am not sure if that is any different to anything else in the computer industry, there is constant change everywhere, as a result companies have to move with the times to make sure they are meeting customer expectations and also raking in more profits. I fail to see how this is any different.
Paul, I know you are in the middle, God know how your bosses are letting you hang out to dry, can you tell me if we are going to see an updated firmware over the next month? Or is this just another pipedream and delay tactic to gather information. I want to know if I should be planning something else and dumping the drive, or as a few have suggested maybe need to see what legal options are available to us.

Hi, I am connecting to my PS3 using WPA-PSK wireless network. My PS3 is running the latest firmware (2.53?).
My Linkstation is as follows:
Model Name: LS-CHL F/W 1.01
Media Server: Enable
UPnP: Enable
Symptoms: PS3 Identifies the LinkStation and connects to it, and used to work fine, streaming video and audio without problems, but now disconnects from the PS3 with a DLNA error every 10 seconds. I can see all files on the LS HD but cannot stay connected to it long enough to stream any of them.
The PS3 has an 80% signal strength connection to the router. LS is connected to the Router via 100mbps ethernet.

We have several of these devices at the hospital that I work for. Thinking that these are DLNA compliant, we invested in few PS3s for patients (mostly kids) so they could play games and also be able to see pictures/videos uploaded by their families, using the same controller/sysmtem. After spending days I have not been able to get it to work. I can not believe how any descent company would make such products. PATHETIC.

I purchased a Buffalo Linkstation Live device at the beginning of 2008 (here in the UK) and have had similar problems desribed in this thread e.g. errors in accessing data files and non-stop hard-disc activity when using PCast (I have a range of media playback devices). I spent some time trying to liaise with Buffalo and DLNA.org all to no avail. They did not want to know. I have since given up using the Buffalo LinkStation as a media server and have gone back to using my PC - which works perfectly - streaming media files throughout the house to different devices.

Balham, yes, I agree with you. I bought mine specifically to act as a DLNA server, and it doesn't - even though it clearly says on the packaging that it does. I am seriously considering buying a twonky license - although they now don't support NAS devices.

Ihave now installed the Twonky Media Manager to my XP Laptop and routed themedia files to my Media Shared folder in LSL. Everything works well and I cansee and play all files through PS3 and Nokia N95. So I'm really waiting for theupdate as the Twonky Media Manager trial ends in 26 days and I don't want tokeep my Laptop on all the time...

My issue is that I had it working (intermittently), then updated the firmware on my linkstation (it crashed for some reason during a refresh of my media), and now I can't get it working at all. Not sure if it had a different version on it. It finds the linkstation, but says there are no files (music, pictures or video).

I haven't checked into the forum in a while (mainly because every time I think about this problem, it makes me want to kill myself!) Not really.
So when Paul says several people are working on this now, it sounds like they've started tinkering.
I'm curious, has anyone at Buffalo sat down with a PS3, a router, and a LinkStation and made a lil' DLNA network to experiment with? That should mimic the problem we're all having and be a nice way to start.
I also would just like to clarify what somebody said (bigrob maybe?) that the issue is not with a specific type of media file (codec, container, etc..) it is with ALL files and file types. The PS3 will not recognize anything at all from the LS. It shows up on the PS3s menus, but claims there are no files on the drive.

I am new in this forum and have faced similar DLNA problems described in here. I have had HS-DH500GL about 4 months and streaming stopped working after PS3 firmware upgrade (2.40 or something). I am sure Buffalo engineers have already aware of this (?), but it may be worth to take a look what has been written in the Twonkyforum about this problem: http://www.twonkyforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=5307
So the problems maybe the same with Buffalo configuration (?)

I have a Live station and I have just flashed it to 2.10 and I can now confirm you that I have DLNA issue with my PS3. It was not the case before with firmware 1.06.
As firmware 1.06 is still available on the french site, do you think I can downgrade the firmware back to 1.06? Did some of you try?
Also I found that the last version of the firmware is the japanese one (here

My PS3 is able to connect to Media Server on link station but it is not consistent. Only about 50 mp3 files show up, only in folders B-K.

I found something Interesting. I connect to my LinkSatation via a PS3, WMP11, Itunes and several other DLNA/UPnP devices I am testing. I had similar problems with all methods. I was able to see my music but that was it. All my devices see the folders -- but just like the issue everyone is reporting with the PS3 -- "No Files Found" is what I am experiencing. As I have the latest and greatest versions through out the house, I have isolated my issue to the folder structure.
I have a Share folder and under it I have Music, Pictures, and Movies. Each one of those folders have sub folders for organizing the content. When I set up the Media Service on the Linkstation I pointed it to the root of the Share folder. From all the DNLA devices, as I mentioned, I was able to access the Music. However, no Pictures except for the Album Art that was located in the Music folder.
So playing around I pointed the Media Service directly to the Pictures folder. Voila! There they were on the PS3, WMP11, and Itunes. As expected there was no Music since I was pointing one level down in the structure. I stopped my testing as I find it unacceptable that I would have to dump all content into one directory/folder and loose the ability to organize by subfolder (I am not even sure it would work if I dumped all content in one folder ). If reading off the root of the Share will only detect the Music that is a serious flaw in the design.
I know I can simply create a network map to each folder but that defeats the purpose. I bought the device for the ease of use so anyone in my family can access the media content without having to create shares everywhere. Unless Buffalo can resolve the issue soon it is back to Circuit City for a refund. I should have stuck with my original plan to build the NAS myself or at a minimum spent the extra dollars and purchased a bare bone box like the Thecus 4100. Heck my modded XBOX is a better solution at this point.
I do hope Buffalo can fix the problem or tell me what boneheaded mistake I have made in my setup.

Hi again!
Now there is some positive progress going on...
I waited and had a cup of coffee as I didn't want to start writing too nasty mail...
So, after a while the PCast refreshed and applied wihtout those error messages and some files came visible, not all.
So, now I'm gointo leave it and go to bed hoping that tomorrow all files are visible!
I'll thank you Buffalo already a bit but I will confirm after everything is working.

As for the upate thanks it's good to see these things are moving forwards.
I have run the updated refreshed my pc cas, I have no problems with the files working, the ones listed all work fine,
the video files are all listed and work fine, the photo's only list all of them if I go via folders and go into each album, and not if I list all photo's
This seems the same for the mp3 I have so many mp3's it's around 15gb but only 20/30 of them list if I choose all music. if I go by artist etc its all the same it only lists a few of the many mp3's

Have read through this post and wanted to provide some feedback for Buffalo regarding a problem I have been experiencing relating to the DLNA feature. Have been using LinkStation Live for a couple of years now, recently added PS3 system to the mix but have not had the problems experienced by most users. That is, I have been able to stream music, video & photos to the PS3. System details as follows:
Linkstation Live HS-DH320GL
- Firmware: 2.11
- PCast Media Server: Enabled
- Update Media List: Automatic
- Media Folder on LS: Media (top level share). This has been mapped as “M” drive on PC.
- Folder Structure under “Media” => iTunes, Video & Pictures.
Computer:
- Thinkpad T61 w/Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, Vista Biz SP1
- iTunes 8.0.2.20
- iTunes Music Folder Location: M:\iTunes
- Audio imported with iTunes: MP3 @ 320kbps stereo
- iTunes music library: 4880 songs, 48.41 GB
PS3
- 80GB NA model (2 months old)
- Firmware: 2.53
- Media Server Connection Enabled
Network:
- No Domain, workgroup only
- Hardware: Linksys WRT54GS router (fw 4.71.1), Linksys WET200 bridge (fw 1.0.13)
- Linkstation connected to router (static IP 192.168.1.110)
- PS3 connected to bridge (DHCP)
- Router connected to bridge in B/G mixed mode with WPA2-PSK.
Problem: The PS3 only shows 10 songs under the following directories:
Music=>Linkstation=>Music=>All Music
Music=>Linkstation=>Music=>Genre=>Rock=>All Music.
However “All Music” under smaller subfolders/subcategories are faithfully presented and play flawlessly. This would seem to point to a problem that the Linkstation has with the size of the library subcategory. The Rock genre is 2/3 of my library (30GB, almost 3000 items). My next largest subcategory is 6.6GB with 395 songs, and the PS3 has no problem showing (or playing) “All Music” under that category. I had hoped that the new firmware v2.11 would solve this problem, but to no avail. Additional troubleshooting I have done:
- Copied entire media library to another computer running XP Pro & WMP11, and enabled sharing in WMP11. The PS3 sees the other computer and has no problem with the Rock category from this system.
- Tested the copied library with TVersity. As with WMP 11, the PS3 sees & plays all.
- Bypassed the Bridge and used the PS3’s wifi to connect directly to the router, problem still exists.
- Created an empty share on the Linkstation, changed the media folder under PCast to the empty folder, flashed the database, confirmed no files on the PS3, then changed PCast back to the Media folder & reflashed. No change.
- Shut down & restarted the Linkstation. No change.
- Similarly power cycled the router, bridge, & PS3. No change.
The main reason I want this to work is so I can play a random mix from that category, something I can do with the iPod, but DLNA makes this much easier if I can get it to work.
Please let me know if you need any more information to help solve this problem. Thank you in advance for your efforts.

I spoke too soon.
This fix doesn't work very well... I have about 23000 MP3s in my share.
The "All Music" category displays 0/0, lists the file names, but nothing is selectable.
"Artists" behaves the same way. Folder and Genre work fine.
"Folder" works fine, but everything is sorted reverse alphabetically - ie Z-A rather than A-Z.
One serious omission is Album Artist. Albums with Various Artists are split into individual Artist names - not that Artist works for my anyway...

Though the logic in how PS3 sees the files is not so clear but I'm working on it.

Hi Paul ./ Buffalo,
I have the LS Live with Bit Torrent and had the problem of constant DLNA #2101 errors every 5 seconds or so on the PS3 - it listed the files on the drive wirelessly fine, but kept disconnecting.
I am happy to report that the new firmware update has completely fixed the problem - and it is now working with my PS3 100%.
Thanks for putting to much time and effort into supporting your userbase and listening to us.

I have a Linkstation Live (HS-DGL500, FW 2.10), a Linkstation Pro Duo (LS-W2.0TGL/R1-V3, FW 3.07) and a Linkstation Live with Bit Torrent (LS-CH1.0TL, FW 1.02). I am using (among some other equipment) Sonos for music, Tvix 6500 for movies, Sony KDL-46Z4500 (TV) for photos, among all.
I have been trying to use Sony for music and videos and Kiss DP-600 media player for pics, music and videos but the results have been very unstable. Still, they should work. I might add a PS3 one of these days, too.
Through the link above I can see that all above mentioned equipment have recently updated FW´s. However, these are not at Buffalo´s European site.
So my question is, should I install them of wait until they appear in the European site. With my LS Live I had huge problems when I went for a US FW version without knowing it did not work for me.
Also, the LS Pro Duo download page explains something strange about the latest FW: "Firmware will only work on units with 3.XX firmware". Or it means exactly what it says, if you have now 3.xx fw, you can update to 3.08.

Wayne, I'm in the UK and using 2.11. DLNA now works for me within the limitations of insufficient breakout of MP3 information (eg no Album Artist), reverse alphabetical lists. It could be due to your directory structure... but, saying that I don't believe this fix - or the pcast software is working right...
My structure is:

I have Read about the directory structure problem. Mine is \\Linkstation\Media\Music. This is AFTER the built in PS3 folders of \\Music\folder.
My father in law has the same set up but with the older model N1 router and his setup runs smoothly.This is why I bought a similar router, but still the problems.
He has suggested it could be the encryption as he ony uses Wep, whereas I use WPA/PSK. My give this a try.

I've just taken delivery of both a Terastation Live 4TB, and a Linktheatre HD Nfiniti. The Linktheatre is for the office, and I use a PS3 in the living room. OK, any ideas when the updated drivers will be available for the Terastation, to allow use of the PS3?
Further, I can access the media on my PC from the PS3, by running the media server software that came with the Linktheatre - but cannot seem to get directory structures to display in alphabetical order - can someone point me in the right direction for that also?

I don't understand why others have problems with the TS Live and DLNA to the PS3. I bought my first 2TB TS Live (RAID5) about 2 years ago. I have continued to upgrade firmware as released to include the current version 2.14. My directory structure for my TS Live is a share called "Media" with folders of Music/artist/album, pictures/event subfolder and Video/title/title.vob. I initially used PCast but got frustrated because I would often have to manually rescan the share when I added new media...and the PCast interface is slow. So I bought Twonky for $40 and achieved perfection. My PS3 has never had a glitch seeing my TS Live and it has streamed music and video flawlessly over my 100mps wired network (I have recently upgraded to a Gigabit network). I rip my DVDs as the full VOB (no compression). So the video stream plays with the exact same audio and video quality as the original DVD. At any point, my network may be supporting a Vonage phone call, my son's WoW game, my daughter streaming music from the TS Live and me watching an HD Video via my PS3 on my HDTV. With all of that network action, neither the TS Live nor the PS3 blink.
I recently purchased a second 1TB TS Live refurb from eCost for $268.00. I replaced the 250GB drives with Seagate 1.5TB Drives ($119.00 each - needed to upgrade FW). I now have a second 6TB TS Live for a $744.00. I updated the FW to 2.14, added Twonky and it runs flawlessly as well. I use this new TS Live as a grandfather backup to the house's PCs and the original TS Live.
I can't think of a more perfect solution to manage and stream media to my PS3 than the TS Live.

My $40 investment in Twonky was a drop in the bucket considering I invested $995 in my original 2TB TS Live and $499 in my PS3. $40 of $1,534 = 2.6% of the total investment. I also bought an alternate remote for my PS3 (Harmony One + IR2BT = $250). I bought PlayOn for my PS3 to play Hulu and Netflix for $40. I bought DVDFab to rip my DVDs = $49
As I said, PCast worked fine except for the occasional need to manually scan media after adding a new movie. I don't mind that Twonky is not supporting new NAS releases. 4.4.6 works great. If a future incompatibility arises, I'll look at other software like Tversity. TwonkyMedia is considering offering the new NAS releases in which the only available support would be through the forums - like Open Source. That would be fine with me. While MS Windows comes with Wordpad. I don't hesitate to buy a better word processor by investing in MS Office. It doesn't make me feel that my Windows investment was wasted or make me return the PC.
All in all, I am extremely satisfied with my setup and have no problems with the investment. It works great to the point that my daughter had a friend over last night who said "Wow, this kind of stuff isn't supposed to exist until the future!"

I know this does not really address the Buffalo DLNA issue directly, but I am assuming others here are already using the free PS3 Media Server software out there. This thing is awesome. Ok you have to have it running on a PC, but the end results are great. It is still ironing out some early issues, but overall it blows some of the mainstream apps out of the water. It plays a number of different formats as well. If you have not already tried it, check it out.

I have been battling a similar issue with the following: Link Station Live 500GB (uPNP/DLAN) and a HP MediaSmart Connect (MSC) x280N. The infrastructure is base on a D-Link DIR-655 connecting the NAS via gigabit, the media player via Wireless N and the XP pro via wireless N.
The MSC identified the XP Media Player 11 (Control point/media Server/media Renderer) and streaming is no problem via the PC gateway service (HP modified middleware).
Problem is the MSC would sporadically not discover the NAS. Second, when it would, it would not stream.wav files. Well the wave problem was resolved by ripping media to the NAS as wma format. Did not make sense since the wav would play on the XP MP11 without issue. But I was glad that problem was "managed". (in retrospect this was probably NAS firmware.. more below)
However, the uPNP discovery issue was becoming a real pain as I do not want to have a PC running all the time, and sense both sides (Media player and NAS) are DLNA I should be able to stream directly across the wireless N without the PC.
Well I downloaded the Intel uPNP support software and sniffed the network. It appeared the linkstation was not responding the multicase request for service (discovery) by the MSC. (Google SDDP).
I then did a web based reset of the NAS and while monitoring the multicast from the MSC I was now able to see responses from the NAS. The MSC then presented the NAS as a Media Server in the MSC GUI.
Contacted Buffalo web since a new firmware was posted (2.11). Since the "fix" was related to the media player and PS3 I contacted technical support. Did not get any real meat on the details of the firmware upgrade but it was agree that base on the symptoms, this could have a bearing on the dentifed problem.
Upgrade when without a problem - hint use a wired connection for reliability. No configuration settings were lost and no new features were exposed in the web GUI.
After the upgrade, the NAS was reliably found, media played - including .wav!
In summary, make sure uPNP is enabled on the approved router, I would
- Assign IP specific addresses based on client MAC from the DHCP server (router) and
- Download the Intel tools as they were the key in sniffing the network for uPNP protocol communication
If the uPNP protocol is not working reliably (Control point joins network, Discovery via multicast and Device identifies services), the comm ports blocked (firewalled) or UPD is not supported the devices(Control point/media Server/media Renderer) will not "discover" each other and you won't get very far.
Once the discovery is made and the content is enumerated, the communication protocol and codecs chain can be established for point to point communication.

Since no firmware upgrade yet exists for the TeraStation Live thought I would add this bit that has worked for me albiet not the way it should be. I have the 1tb TeraStation Live with 1.1 firmware.
I have noticed that if i simply reboot the Terastation all of the media files are visible to the PS3. if anything is missing or not found when i add it to the TS Live, i continue to add more and more files only then rebooting to keep the hard drive cycles to a minimum.
of course this doesnt address the real problem and that is simply having a real fix for this from Buffalo.

drisok: Why don't you upgrade your TS Live firmware to 2.14? As I said in my earlier post, PCast DLNA to my PS3 worked for me with 2.14 with the exception of occasionally having to do a manual scan to update the index (although I now use Twonky). FW 2.14 has been available for over a year. There were several interim releases between your 1.1 release and 2.14 that include a lot of fixes and added Web Access.

Anyone? I see in a list of discontinued products that the replacement to model #HD-H1.0TGL/R5 is the Terastation Live, model #HS-DH1.0TGL/R5. (List of Replacement Models) While I can't imagine that such would be the case, could I possibly download the firmware for that replacement model and try it? I fully expect that the hardware is different enough so that the firmware will not work on my Terastation. Just thought I'd ask the question.
So, please, can anyone answer the question of whether the HD-HTGL/R5 can/will ever be made to work with the PS3 Thanks again.

I have 2 of the "early" TS Lives. The 2.14 firmware works fine.
Go to this link, select TeraStation Live from the "Product Name" drop down. Forget about the "Product Model" drop down. Download and install firmware version 214_102. Viola! You are now a happier camper.

The ARM9 processor in all models of the TS Lives is the same. I would assume that Buffalo is eliminating the 1TB and 2TB models because the cost of drives with higher capacity is dropping so there is little demand for the lower capacity drives on a high-end NAS.
EDIT: shaneman: I may have misunderstood your previous post. Is your TS a TeraStaion Live or a TeraStation or a TeraStation Home Server? If it is not a TeraStation Live, you are correct. The original TS has a PowerPC processor and cannot be upgraded with the same firmware as the TS Live; but there are firmware upgrades available on the link above for these models as well.

I have a Buffalo LSCHL F/W 1.02 and the DLNA server works fine on the ethernet side of my NETGEAR router (CVG834G). The LSCHL is connected on the ethernet side. A PC or an XBOX360 when on the ethernet side can see the LSCHL and the content of the media server with itunes for instance.
When the same PC is connected to the wifi side (same network), then the PC can see the shared folders and their content without problem but not the content of the DLNA server, itune detects the server but it appears emty.
It looks as if the router was filtering some traffic between the ethernet side and the wifi side of my Lan!
I saw many forums with people having this type of problem but could not find a solution.
Anyone has a clue?

Yes it is DLNA compatible
I haven't tried it with a Denon receiver but it sure works with many other products. Go ahead and get a refurbished unit from Ecost.com for $68 (500GB) and try it for yourself.
You need to know what you are doing with networking in order for the Denon to see the LinkStation and you must have your router assign fixed IP addresses for both unit so they can always see each other without interruption. If you don't have networking expereince, you will get frustrated and you will spend late night hours trying to figure out what you did wrong.

Hi, I have upgraded to 2.11 and things seem to run better now. The Denon amp can see the directories and play .wmv files. But strangely, it can't see all the directories. I used PCast to refresh and flash the database but no change. The software is flaky - can I get some real support? Paul?

Just bought HS-DH500GL solely for storage and connection to PS3. So far, what a waste. Running 2.60 firmware on PS3. Did the 2.11 update on the linkstation, since it "said" that is what it fixed.
I can see the drive and what seems to be 10 or so random pictures, but nothing else.
Called support and they said Sony is working on it since it's their firmware 2.60 that broke it again.
But I also have a Mac with a demo of Nullriver MediaLink running on it. I turn this on(30 min limit on demo) and it works like a charm. Pulls up the Nullriver MediaLink right under my Linkstation name in the PS3 menu and I can see on my PS3 every photo/vid/mp3 that is on my Mac.
So I fail to see how the PS3 DLNA is not working.
Too bad I have to keep my Mac on and use it's hard drive, to use Nullriver solution.

Wow this is a very long thread, now it would sound bad if i said that most of you are missing something...so I would say maybe i got a very god unit.
i had to spend some time configuring everything but the Linkstation DLNA works pretty much flawlessly with my ps3, haven't tried with a receiver so can't speak for that.
as for the videos it plays most of the videos and ones that it doesn't play are actually not supported by ps3, confirmed that by using tversity on my pc....
so stop bashing the poor company and maybe try to fix the network, one solution would be to upgrade the firmware on router, before i upgraded the router, starting access on ps3 would reset the router...causing everything to disconnect...

In terms of support, the company fully deserves to be bashed. I posted a very simple question on this forum (What file types are supported by PCast?) at least a month ago and it has yet to be answered.
I have a Linkstation Live HS-DH50GL with firmware version 2.11. Using iTunes on my WinXP laptop, I can see the Linkstation as a shared device and I can see all the audio files, but I do not see any video files. Nor can I see anything on the Linkstation from my xBox360.
I have no expectations that anyone from Buffalo will even address this post. I assume they ignore such posts because they are aware of the bugs and they have no fixes available.

I have sent emails and calls into MacroVision(company that bought Mediabolic, maker of the media server), DLNA.org, and of course Buffalo. Next one will probably be the BBB, although seems Buffalo blows them off also.
4 calls into support. Here's their story and they like to stick to it. I wish I was making this up.
1st "it's Sony's fault, always is"
2nd "yeah it's too bad, we know it's broke, but I'm not allowed to get information to or from engineering".
3rd. "As long as the PS3 sees the Linkstation, it's working, it's the PS3s fault that it can't see the files."
4th. "Send an email to info@buffalotech.com and wait for new firmware update, hopefully they'll make one" seems like odd email address for support group(blew me off?). btw, did that, no response.
BTW Along with Nullriver's MediaLink running on my Mac, I also tried Twonky on my Mac and it also turns my Mac into a funtional DLNA media server that the PS3 has no problems with. Both work like a charm. Would love to try Twonky on the Linkstation, but of course can't telnet into it to get it installed. For you kids out there though, don't try that at home even if you could, you will void your "warranty".

What file types/extensions does the Mediabolic software on the linkstation try to index for pics/music/video? Is there anyone out there running PS3 firmware 2.60 and Linkstation Live 2.11 firmware(both the latest stuff) and can see the videos? What are the file types?
Yesterday's Buffalo experience,
1st call). "Did a force update of firmware as directed last night, didn't change anything, DLNA still not working for video's at all, what more can I try?" CLICK hung up on me.
2nd. What video formats does it try to index? No answer. "Sir, there are no known issues with the Linkstation and DLNA." But a minute or so later said he was sure engineering was working on it. What more can I do, I asked? He sent me over to Sales dept.
Spoke with someone who seemed to care, said I would get call back that day, from someone after they looked into it. Nothing yet.
I have been calm and perfectly cordial in my calling and trying to get any help from support, but it is taking a toll on my nerves. I just want to scream. It's like entering an episode of the twilight zone. I just want direction on what more I can try, or troubleshoot, and some spec information so I can further try to figure it out for myself. I used to support UNIX servers with Oracle and many apps integrated with them. I like to test but throw me a bone here. What files types have you tested with in your lab? Even though I was told you only test with Buffalo products, it still might help. Please, someone in support has to have enough pride and ethics to at least tell us the truth. I should have known from that sigh at the mention of DLNA on that first call to support that this might not be good, but wow didn't expect this.

I turned my linkstation (HS-DH500GL) off over a year ago when I spent countless nights in front of my laptop trying to get my ps3 to play just a single video pr mp3, and to no avail. I couldn't even sell the thing on ebay! As i felt guilty about giving it to someone.
Now I've seen the new firmware update (2.11) which supposedly fixes the issue. so I spend another day trying to get the firmware updater to work. Turn the PS3 on and..... NOTHING! It can see that I've got a linkstation but it wont let me see or play any files of any sort. I can't simply spend any more days doing this!!
It's a waste of time buying one of these products. If I wanted a hard drive, i would have bought one at a fraction of the price i bought my linkstation for. I'm so annoyed that I'm going down this route again a year after I tried so desperately to sort it out last time. I wish I had bought a different product - media server, one that works!
When will they finally sort this issue out? What a company!!!
Is there any one out there that has installed the latest firmware 2.11 on the live linkstation and their PS3 doesn't even read a single file?
Please help me. I'm going MAD!!!! again!

The problem still consists, if you have your PS3 running and then start your linkstation the PS3 can see it correctly and it can even play the video files for a while (1-3 minutes) until the error message, DLNA error 2101, appears. I’ve come to the conclusion that the Linkstation works correctly as long as it is refreshing the media list on the Linkstation. But as soon as this is process is completed, it does not longer function as an DLNA media server because the PS3, or any other media streaming DLNA certified device for that matter, can see it anymore.

DLNA on Linkstation is dead. Upgraded to 2.11 - still the same issues; electroorganik: I have just about given up on this NAS box being a media-server. If Buffalo wants folks like me to remain their customers, they need to show some customer-orientation otherwise, I'm taking my business elsewhere.

There still is a major problem and I would not recommened buying a Linkstation for streaming media to a PS3 because it doesnt work.

Go into web admin / maintanace /Initialization / Restore
Restor the linkstation and bob's your uncle!!! PS3 should now play all your linkstation content.

installed 1tb linkstation live 2 days ago and must say it's been a frustration getting it to work with my 80gb ps3. however, there is GOOD NEWS! today it works! here's what i found to be the successful order of operations.
upgraded to 2.11 firmware
created subfolders under share folder for 'our music' 'our videos' etc
transferred a variety of file types to appropriate share folder
resync'd database using pcast option
(at this point, some folders appeared but no files on ps3)
left drive on all night
left drive on all day
found all linkstation folders/files accessible on ps3 this evening!
i think the darn thing just needs A LOT of time to index the database. don't know why.
issues:
limited avi support; some avis play, others do not
5 folder rule seems to apply; anything indexed deeper than that does not appear in file structure on ps3

I have set PC cast and subnets but not set static ip's (yet - do I have to?), but I am wondering if some sort of software is required on the NAS. If this is the case how do I do it?
The Things I think I should do
1. Set static IP for LS
2. Se static IP for DMS 510
3 Set the LinkStation:
Model: HS-DH500GL
Firmware: 2.10
PCast settings:
Media Servers: Enable
Media Folder: MyMedia
PCast Password: Disabled
Limit DLNA Client Access: Disabled
Update Media List: Automatic Update
4. Update the firmware -but to 2.10 or 2.11 is not clear or try the force firmware reflash method found here and then re-initialize. Maintenance->Initialization->Restore
And that should be it.
I am a bit uncertain about the firmware update, the questions are
a. I am in the uk where should I down load it
b. Do I have to run the forced method first or should I just run the exe file?
Can some in the Know (Paul / Moderator) confirm that is the right steps required

MANY thanks all for this thread, I stumbled onto it due to having a few (common it would appear!) issues between my LinkStation DH500GL (running 2.11) and my PS3.
I'd updated to 2.11 pretty much by accident whilst trying to improve write speeds to it from my new x64 Vista PC (firmware version was a red herring, turned out to be the ethernet driver on the new PC).
Anyway.
Both my PS3s (40Gb in my office, 60Gb in the family room) can see the LS as a media server.
Both can see and play my mere 4Gb or so of music.
Both can see and play my 8Gb or so of photos.
And finally, both can see and play (15mins and still going fine) my 40Gb (so far) of .mp4 movies :)
So far, so good... :)
The only slight fly in the ointment is persuading the LS to refresh the media list.
It seems to be done using the PCast page on my PC and then by a random alignment of pressing the 'Refresh' button, the 'Reflash Database' button, and how the LS is feeling at the time.
I've yet to work out the exact procedure (but I suspect it's the refresh database that I need).
Both the PS3s are connected to the LS with an ethernet (wired) connection via a Netgear 10/100 switch.

Been reading through some of this long thead but couldn't find *the* answer - apologies if I have missed it.
My problem: Linkstation Mini and PS3 (Twonky 4.x offered -> 5 is required)
After PS3 upgraded to firmware 2.70 and 2.76, the Mini lost its capacity to stream avi-files to the PS3. I went to Buffalo's European site and was pleased to find a very recent firmware upgrade, 1.06, as of May 12, 2009, hoping that would take care of the problem. It didn't. Bummer.
Can Mini owners expect help from Buffalo any time soon? Any comment would be appreciated.

For the Linkstation Mini and the PS3, here is the solution .
I have to connect to Twonky server (IPaddress:9050)
in the settings, you can configure the client. For the PS3 if you specifie "PS3" instead of "Twonky standard client", every AVI DIVX work fine on the PS3.
You must rebuild the database on Twonky Server (can take 1 hour !).

I had problems with the 2.7 PS3 firmware upgarde as all of a sudden my .avi files wouldn't stream. Came up as corrupted file yet I know that before the upgrade they worked and streamed fine. Found a dead easy solution - renamed the files from .avi to .mpg - and it suddenly all works again!
There is a batch command you can do at command prompt - something like ren *.avi *.mpg - and it'll change all the file extenstions for you, saving having to do each one in turn.
Hope this helps - but don't ask me why it does!

Well i was raving about how it seemed to work. When you try adding a file (or files) the PS3 doesn't see them. Eveytime you add a file and you want the PS3 to see it. You need to re-initialise the linkstation again! Losing your ip address and everything else!!! After you have done that you'll have to wait for a good day or so until the database is fully populated.
It's still not no where near man enough for the job! It's very upsetting to say the least. I'm one of the many people (even on this thread) that has been trying to get this sorted for over a year. Buffalo seem to hide behind a wall. These products are not cheap. Would be nice to get a little help from Bufallo, or some feedback.

Did anyone ever get this working or figure out what the issue is? I have a PS3 running v3.1 of PS3 software, and a Livestation Link Pro 1TB running 1.07 v of Buffalo software. When I put a media file on the hard drive using my PC why doesn't it show up on the PS3? Surely thats the core function of the NAS!! How did they mess that up!! I had to mess around for ages - restart the NAS, disconnect the media server and reconnect it etc on the PS3.....!
I also get the protocol error 2101 / 2104 error messages...

After about two years of trying to get this useless box working i've removed my hard drive form the linkstation live and i've just thrown it in the bin :o). It eventually went into EM mode when i got back from Christmas '09 and I've been trying to recover it since and no one at buffalo seems to be able to help and vista doesn't co-operate with any software that buffalo supplies. Good buy Linkstation Live! It's been nothing but rubbish. I would advise anybody going through the same issues that i've been through to just stick a cheap old PC in your loft with a big hard drive in it, it will be much much better than a buffalo linkstation... I'm half expecting this post to be deleted soon, because that's the sort of company buffalo is. I'm seriously disapointed by this company. My personal time and devotion to sorting out this problem has been immense and unfortuately enough is enough.
