firmware update failed
« on: December 28, 2011, 12:07:24 PM »

hi all

i've a LS-WXL with two 1TB disks, firmware 1.42, using it both with MAC Lion and Linux

i've tried to update to firmware 1.56 in a bunch of ways, with no success at all:

  • dowloading the update application for MAC from the buffalo site, connecting the LS directly to the MAC via ethernet cable, disabling wireless card, with no other hw in the network... no results: it says that the HDD partitions can not be confirmed... tried again with the debug=1 option, but i haven't found any way to show the debug window up
  • downloading the update application for win in a virtual machine with winXP: no way to access the linkstation, due to the virtual network in between
  • direct firmware update from the web configuration page: it seems to stuck on the final part of the process, when it says that it is necessary to restart the linkstation, and wait for ths to complete (a bit confusing... does it mean that i have to restart the station brutally, or simply that i have to wait, wait wait wait and wait?? in any case i waited, with no results

at the end of the story, i've a link station with the orange led fixed... and i do not know what does it mean...

any help?

tnx in advance

rosanna

Don't worry about the fixed orange (solid amber) LED.  It simply means that a new firmware is available.

Which RAID level are you running?  Have you ever removed the drives?  Are you sure that the drives are in the bays they were formatted?  If not sure, try swapping the disks, maybe this is why you get this message.

In order to update (which I would say is not important) you need to edit the LSUpdater.ini file from NoFormatting = 1 to NoFormatting = 0, but doing so will destroy the data.

i backed all data up, removed the RAID 1 array, formatted both disks... just to "start from scratch",... already done also the NoFormatting=0 trick, but no way!

i did't try swapping the HDs....  how can this solve the problem, in your opinion? (i'll try tomorrow, in any case)

I was running RAID0 and mistakenly swapped the drives.  After putting them in the correct bay I was able to flash without formatting.

Try to reset to factory defaults, but:

If data is not a concern and you really want to start from scratch, then delete the partitions from both disks completely and do a TFTP boot procedure (read FAQ at the beginning of the forum).

What format did you format the drives in? If they are formated in NTFS or FAT32 the unit may never boot. The drives need to be unallocated.

TFTP boot works within a virtual Windows XP machine.

I have tested it using latest Ubuntu and Virtual Box.

Set the host to IP address 192.168.11.2, the virtualized network card as "bridged adapter, (eth0)" and a IP address (within Windows) 192.168.11.1.

@Jotin: drives are XFS, and the unit works correctly... simply i was not able to upgrade the firmware

@ESCHER: i'll try the way you suggest ... i'll let you know..

    -  Your NAS model's TFTP boot image( Download for Firefox/Chrome ) ( Download for IE ) (even if i did not use it!)

  2. disconnect everything from the router
  3. connect PC and LinkStation directly via ethernet cable
  4. if your OS is windows, goto 11
  5. if your OS is linux, install virtual box
  6. start virtualbox, create a virtual machine with Windows, and set virtualized network card as "bridged adapter, eth0"
  7. set  linux host PC as 192.168.11.2
  8. start virtual Windows
  9. set virtual Windows guest  to IP 192.168.11.1

I am confused.  In your initial post, you said that your model is LS-WXL and wanted to update from  FW 1.42 to 1.56.

You flashed a firmware version for LS-WTGL.

Weather your model is not LS-WXL or you flashed a wrong firmware.

In case you flashed the wrong FW version you will not have a fully functional unit.

You were very lucky that you did not bricked your unit.
