Unable to upgrade firmware
« on: January 08, 2020, 09:34:42 AM »
I got a LS-CHL and downloaded the 1.74 firmware on the support page. It does not want to update from 1.06 and I get the "Linkstation that needs updating wasn't found"

Here is what I have done so far
updated to 1.12 thinking that I need a more recent version in order to update to 1.74, but it did not help
I ran the updater in Admin mode, did not help

Serial number: 95826490104176
Product: LinkStation Live (LS-CHL) - LS-CH1.0TL

Thank you!

There are two different versions of this device which have different firmware. Fortunately, the firmware updater is aware of this and doesn't allow you to install the wrong one and damage the device.

They do have a not about it on the firmware page but it's easy to miss:
Quote
* This is the firmware for V1 Series which has blue web-based interface.
The firmware can't use for V2 Series which has red web-based interface.

If you want to try running newer software on this device and have any experience/interest in working with Linux you can install Debian on the device.

The installer files can be found here:
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/buster/main/installer-armel/current/images/orion5x/network-console/buffalo/ls-chl/

The process is the same as the one found here for other devices:

Thanks! Will it make the transfers any faster? It was maxing out at around 12Mbps for me. Took 3 hours to transfer 150GB

Probably not significantly.

There are a lot of factors involved in the speed of file transfers, I would expect in this case your main bottlenecks are hardware related. Given the age of the device (>10 years) that's probably as fast as the hard drive can go.
