procedure for replacing failed drive in LS-QV8.0TL/RS (raid5)
« on: October 27, 2014, 07:47:50 PM »
I restarted my linkstation quad pro today and one of the drives has failed. I have searched the forums and FAQ's, but I find no documented procedure for replacing the drive.

In the linkstation html admin site there is an option to remove the errored drive.  is this required before shutting down and replacing and rebuilding, or can I just replace and rebuild?

you dont have to remove the drive. I never do. Merely turn off the unit. take out the drive. add the new drive. turn the unit on. rebuild the raid with the new drive.

update: found  guide i was hunting for to give you. http://manual.buffalo.jp/buf-doc/35011719-02_EN.pdf , this will be much easier now.

well hockey pucks.
put the new drive in, and it (the new one!) shows red lighted on the device and error in the admin panel, so won't let me rebuild.

What is the error and you said the red light in on the new disk hmm....? need to know the error. Also you might have to reboot. Though its not recommended. Hopefully you have a backup of your data.

because it is raid 5, my data is currently intact.
disk 2 just says Error.
in system/storage/raid array (array 1) it lists the 4 disks
disk 1     Array 1
disk 2     Error
disk 3     Array 1
disk 4     Array 1

I was in the screen above that (Disks) and is why I couldn't find the rebuild button...

on the RAID Array (Array 1) part of the screen, there is a button to rebuild the raid array. when I click it, I get a very ominous warning:
The disk which is used for rebuilding data will be deleted.  cannot cancel this operation. Are you sure you want to operate RAID Rebuilding Array 1?

I assume that is in reference to the second disk that I added.  but I guess I am wanting to verify before I tell it to go.

Correct this is just stating that disk 2 will be wiped to rebuild the raid array.

kewlness. started rebuild.
it seems to me that this should be a bit more informative/friendly.

but in any case, it is rebuilding now. no lost data. RAID 5 doing what it's supposed to do, no surprises.
