I have a WHR-G301N which I can connect to okay using my laptop via wireless using
the button on the top of the router (using AOSS) and the Buffalo connection wizard.
I have also have two PC's connected via LAN cable. At first I thought it would be okay
just to connect them up and go but the two PCs did not work simulatenously,
so I used the same CD set up wizard that I had used with the laptop and set
up both computers using the wired connection part of the wizard. The Buffallo
wizard installed theree pieces of software into my computer (the last a "raku raku
(easy) autoupdate")
I am using a Japanese windows 7 a Cable (TV and Internet) network.
All went well it seemed. But I loose internet connection from time to time especially
(but perhaps not only) when both computers are attempting to connect to the net.
Basically the computer that is connected first seems to loose its connection when
the second computer uses the net.
If the second computer stops using the net then if I click on the internet part of
the connection in the network panel, which will have a red x over it, (mockup below)
http://nihonbunka.com/images/network.jpg
Tthen windows does various check ups and I usually I regain connection, especially
if the other PC is no off or not connected to the web.
I am told that I had been "unable to use the default gateway" but the trouble is now solved.
And it is solved for a while until I attempt to use both computers at once.
ipconfig /all via the console gives the below, translated from the Japanese to my

The local area network state window says that I have an internet connection now
via TC/IPv4 but not via TC/IP v6 a
http://nihonbunka.com/images/network2.jpg
The local area network configuration screen looks like this.
http://nihonbunka.com/images/network1.jpg
And the ones with pereferences (TC/IP v6 and TC/IPv4) say that they are set to automatic.
When I attempt to connect to the router at http://192.168.11.1
I am asked for a username and password but I am not sure what these are.
There is no mention of one in the pieces of paper (that all seem generic)
that came in the router box, afaik. There are three long numbers printed
on the router itself. Perhaps I should use Admin plus one of those?
I would not really know how to set up a router anyway. Strange that
the wizard program should not have worked even after all that software
being installed into my system.a
I would be grateful of any suggestions on what I might do, or what other
information I should provide.
I am loosing access every 20 minutes or so with the dreaded red cross on the internet line diagram
http://nihonbunka.com/images/network3.jpg
Clicking on the red cross, this is what it says when I getconnected again
http://nihonbunka.com/images/network4.jpg
which says the default gateway could not be used.
When the other computer is on I sometimes have to do more than click the red cross and wait.
This time I was told to turn off and on the router or broadband modem. At first I did not and I was
not able to reconnect. Then I did as instructed, turned off and on the Buffalo router, and I was able
to connect agian.
I.e. in full with messages translated into English
I clicked on the red cross show in the network screen between the network and the Internet
http://nihonbunka.com/images/network3.jpg
The the following message was displayed
Checking for problems with the router, or broadband modem
If you are connecting to a hotspot or domain network, then talk to the network administrator.
If not then unplug the device or turn it off
Wait ten seconds after all the device indicators have turned off
Turn the device on agian, or plug it in agian.
When I ignored the above, and told the computer to continue attempting to solve the problem I was told
You do not have an valid IP configuration for local area network connection
You can't use your default gateway
When again clicked the red cross http://nihonbunka.com/images/network3.jpg
and was again told to turn on and off the router, I did so and I was then told
The problem solved was
You don't have a valid IP configuration for local area network connection
And I am on the Net again.
But this process is taking a lot of time alas, both to keep resetting my computer, and now the modem too, and to translate the messages.
I see that in the box with my buffalo router there is a service to set it up for a fee. The fee is quite high about 60USD per computer. I presume that I would have to wait a while before a Buffalo representative came to my house too.
I have read the instructions again and all they say is to use the wizard. Perhaps I should use the wizard again?
I phoned support in Japan. I have spent the last 14 minutes listening to those things that
make you input numbers into your phone.
At one time I found myself with the automatically recording suggestion that I use my router as a hub.
The instructions to do so were give as being here ( a page in Japanese with no option to change language).
http://buffalo.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_i
For my router it says If the router switch is set to auto then if there is a a router function mechanism
then it will automatically be set to Bridge (which sounds like a contradiction) or if you switch the
router off then the router function will be turned off.
I am not sure what a "bridge" is. Should I turn off the router function?
I have been on the phone for more than 17 minutes and this is a long distances call.
The router itself only cost 25USD.
The automatic voice says that there is lots of support on the Buffalo homepage but I tried the model
number of my device plus "password" in both English and Japanese and there were no hits.
How difficult could it be?
Aha the username and password were on one of the generic pieces of paper
username: root
password: (no password)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why does it ask me? If this is the answer then why doesn't it say on the password screen
"If you have not set one then it is root and leave the password empty"?
But then I got throught to a man in Japan at Buffalo.
He said to set the computer ip address manually and that I do nto need to touch the airstationi settings.
So that is what I did.
Control Panel > Internet >Local Area Network> Properties > TCP/IP v4 Then
IP Address 192 168 11 x (where x is different for each of the two computers, and some distance from 1)
Subnet mask 255 255 255 0
Default Gateway 192 168 11 1
DNS server primary 192 168 11 1
Hmm it is working right now. I hope it stays that way.
