Linkstation Quad - unable to connect since switching to Time Warner / Motorola Gateway

My LinkStattion Quad has been working perfectly since last 3 years. I have switched my routers a couple of time and recently it was working off of a 2Wire AT&T UVerse VSDL gateway. I recently switched to Time Warner RoadRunner cable internet and got a Motorola gateway. Connecting my Linkstation to this new gateway but am unable to access it anymore. I searched the forum and found a similar issue related to the "Auto/On/Off" swicth - mine only has AUTO and NORMAL and i flipped it from NORMAL to AUTO and restarted both modem and NAS but still no help. I switched it back to the old 2Wire gateway which i still have lying around and was able to access it again.

What could be wrong with Time Warner/Motorola gateway that it won't show up on the network when connected to it? I'll appreciate any help. TIA.

Hi,

What model motorola gateway?

How many public IP addresses do you have?  Is the Nas getting a private IP address from the Motorola -- can you see it in the setup pages of the gateway?   You cannot access it via the PRIVATE or public network?

[ Edited ]

The gateway is Motorola SBG6580 with 253 CPEs. I don't even see the MAC of my NAS in the gaetway admin screens. I have only tried accessing it from within my network (wired/wireless). One more thing, i noticed the switch on the back of Linkstation says "Manual/Auto" - not "Normal/Auto" as i initially stated.

Don't recall what the manual/auto switch is for on the NAS.  I would think it should be kept on AUTO for DHCP networking/NAT.

A typical consumer internet service only allows ONE CPE, unless you are on a business class setup.    So, you need to check the private IP address range given out by the motorola. What IP address does your computer end up with?  Does it start with 192.168.x.x?  If not, and your computer has your PUBLIC-FACING ip address, then the gateway is NOT setup for NAT.

-- Using your Browser, Log on to your router (by normally typing in the192.168.1.1 address check your router's manual to see what the defaultgateway address)

-- If you already know how to log in to your router, then skip thisstep. If you have never logged on to your router then more than likelyyou still have the default initial log in credentials (username: admin- Password:1234 ..... Again check your router's manual to be sure).

-- Once you are logged in click on sercruity, scroll tot he bottom and make sure "Filter Internet NAT Redirection" is set to "disabled" ,

-- now click on advanced routing -- make sure Nat is enabled.

-- save and apply the settings.  Reboot the router and the NAS.  It should pick up a PRIVATE ip address.

Re: Linkstation Quad - unable to connect since switching to Time Warner / Motorola Gateway

At any point did you have a static IP address assigned to this unit, or DHCP turned off in the web interface of the device? Even if the unit was set to the AUTO switch, if a static IP address had been assigned to the unit, only resetting the device would allow it to go back to DHCP.

The steps for resetting your Linkstation are as follows:

- Hold down the power button for 8 seconds (or switch unit to OFF position.) The LinkStation will shut down after about 30 seconds.

- While holding down the function button, press the power button. The LinkStation will power on and the function LED will begin to flash blue. Continue to hold down on the function button for about five seconds after switching the unit to ON.

- Release the function for three seconds

- While the function LED is still flashing, hold the function button down for eight seconds.

After releasing the function button for the last time, the unit is finished booting once the function light stops flashing and the power light on the front of the unit is solid.

Re: Linkstation Quad - unable to connect since switching to Time Warner / Motorola Gateway

Thanks, that was it - static IP with DHCP off. I did not do it so must be done by Buffalo software. I just connect it to my old router and log in as admin and re-enabled the DHCP. Then i just plug it into the new router/gateway without cycling the power and it picked up a new IP on the new network.
