External USB devices and Direct Copy not working.

Hi,

I own a Linkstation Duo, running Firmware v1.33 (latest FW as of July 2010).

I am not able to use the Direct Copy function to import media from a Camera (Canon) or a Camcorder (Flip).

I followed those instructions many times without success:

http://www.buffalotech.com/knowledgebase/users/kb.php?id=10257&category_id=0&sid2=

The function button does not lit at all when I plug one of those USB device.

BTW, I am able to connect a USB disk and see its content as a shared drive (so the USB port works OK).

But what I want to do his to import the content of my USB camera, by using the DirectCopy feature as documented and advertised (i.e without PC).

Or maybe there is a way to trigger Direct Copy from the admin web interface ?

Thanks for your help,

Manuel.

Re: External USB devices and Direct Copy not working.

What format is the drive in? It would need to be in XFS or FAT32 for the direct copy to work.

I no longer work for or represent Buffalo Technologies

If you have all your stuff on one device, even if it's a network share, it's not a backup.

Saying you lost your data because your backup drive failed is like saying you can't get to work because your backup car broke down.

Re: External USB devices and Direct Copy not working.

I can connect an external USB drive, and that works. No problem here.

My question is about USB cameras and camcorders.

I'd like to import their content (photo, short films) by connecting them directly on the USB port, and press the Function button as explained in the documentation.

How can I decide to format them in XFS or FAT32 !!??

I don't think those devices can be formated in a specific format...

Then they won't work with the Linkstation for direct copy.

Re: External USB devices and Direct Copy not working.

Are there any digital camera compatible with this feature then ?? Could you give the model and vendor ?

It does not work with my Canon Powershot, which is considered a 'standard' digital camera for general public.

Manuel.

[ Edited ]

I guess posting twice is a trend.  Help keep our forums clean please.  Furthermore, there are so many cameras out there and we only tested compatibility with a handful of them.  Unfortunately, even with a specific model number of a camera it's difficult to say why it's not working.

Greatest explanation of the basic internet function.

Please be sure to read the Guidelines before posting as well as the FAQs [1,2,3 and 4] along with the General FAQ. Your question may already be answered.

I chuckled at this, but in all honesty it is useful for forum posting. Not just here, but every forum.

Re: External USB devices and Direct Copy not working.

Hi Dustrega,

Actually I don't understand your answer.

This problem has been posted by dozens of Buffalo users on this forum, and there has been no answer so far, so I think the problem is real.

I am not the only one trying to understand how and if the Direct Copy feature works on my Buffalo Linkstation with various USB cameras or USB disks.

This particular feature is one of the reason why I bought this device, and I have to say that the both the packaging and the documentation is misleading as this feature just DOES NOT work as described.

Please indicate what is the correct procedure step-by-step.

ie: does the folder name matters, as you seemed to say in another thread ?

Otherwise, could you indicate if this problem is being worked on, and will be solved in the next Firmware ?

Thanks,

Manuel.
