It's been a couple of years without any problem whatsoever with my Buffalo Quad 4TB, but something is bound to give eventually. The replacement drive + caddy combo is ridicukously expensive. So can I but a good 1TB trive and replace myself? Is there a list of 'supported' drives of drives known to work OK?
Thanks in advance.

Any HDD with the same specs will work. Same size/RPM and cache. Make manufacturer is not important.

The drives under Buffalo part numbers are the only thing that can be used if you don't want to void your 1 year warranty, but as far as what drives will function in the unit, the info Davo posted is correct.

Thanks guys, my 1 year warrenty came and went a long time ago. I only wish I'd saved myself a lot of pain and bought a good UPS from the very beginning. I think it should be in the instruction manual as a strong recommendation to all. "Don't want your Quad to go up in smoke? Get a UPS!"
Anyway, powering down my Quad now and will try and buy the same drive. Thanks to you both!
