I want to setup my new hard drive, so that I can just swap it over.

Not sure what you meant. Are you attaching the external drive via USB port?

If this is the case, it should not be a problem. You can do it now or on the new firmware depends on version of your firmware.

If I am not mistaken firmware 1.57 did some fix on the external drive formatting. Now 1.58 is available recently.

What I mean is I have a LD-XHS sitting without a HDD at the moment....

I am waiting for an internal cable to be delivered.

Can I install the firmware on the new drive ??? Ready to just swap it in when the internal cable arrives.

Nope not possible unless you clone the HDD of the original drive that was inside the linkstation.
