Accessing FTP externally
« on: April 18, 2012, 04:27:51 AM »
Hi there, I have set up FTP on my Linkstation and I am able to access the share's internally just fine. I have also set up Port Forwarding on my router and Port Scans show the FTP as open. However I am unable to access the FTP site via the web using my global IP. Can anyone help? Model: LS-WTGL/R1-V3 Regards, Jack

you say you are able to access the shares locally but is this via smb or ftp? What happens if you type ftp://local-IP-Of-NAS in the address bar of the browser?

PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

It works using FTP with the local IP, it;s when using the global IP over FTP i get an error. I used an FTP checker that showed it going through to the IP of the LinkStation, but threw back an error, something to do with line returns and carriage returns

If its working locally then the FTP server on the linkstation is working fine, something either on the router/gateway is blocking it from the WAN.

Firstly, edit your last post and remove your WAN IP!!

Secondly, i appear to be able to access the server fine using a browser (see pic below). Obvviously i do not have access the the share/s directly since i dont know the password you have setup for the Jack_Naisbett user.

Ok, I've tested it externally and it works, testing it internally using external IP doesnt work...I'm sure theres a reason and I was just being a bit thick!

Of course it doesn't, for it to work on using your external IP from within your internal network the router/gateway would need to support NAT loopback, which it seems like it doesn't. What kind of router do you have?

ok, you might wanna talk to netgear about enabling NAT lookback on the router, but basically everything is working now.

Just an addition:

The error you receive using ftptest.net  is a known bug in ProFTP (used in Linkstation):
