Buffalo TeraStation with MS Active Directory Does Not Work!
« on: March 31, 2012, 06:27:34 AM »

I recently purchased a TeraStation for the purpose of using it as a NAS on a Windows 2008 server. The TeraStation specs imply that this device can integrate with "active directory". Well sorta, technically it can attach and you can see the active directory groups. The problem is you cannot assign rights and permissions the same as you can on the servers physical drives, making this device nearly useless as an active directory storage area.

I spent a good deal of time trying to configure this, our third party IT support spent a couple hours on it, we called Buffalo support and once the case was escalated were told that we are correct you cannot assign permissions and rights through active directory.

The better solution is to purchase the Buffalo USB interface appliance. Plug the USB into your Windows 2008 Server, create a shared folder and subfolders, assign rights and you are good to go. You can even map it using the MS SYSVOL script.
