How to move files between folders on LinkStation Live

Hi,

 

How do I move files between folders on the same LinkStationbox ?

Doing it via windows mapped drives will cause the copy process to go through the network I suppose...

 

Any better idea ?

   You correct, but unfortunately, as far as I know, that is the only way.

Not quite sure if I understand your question. But I am using MS windows network. Moving files within same LS is all local activity inside NAS.

Yeah if the mapped drive is the same letter it does it on the actual server itself and doesn't route through the network.  But when doing it on different mapped drives you're right it actually brings it to your computer and back to the linkstation.  Like I have my torrent client put everything in a torrent directory which is mapped to T: on my computer and then I have M: where all my media is so when I copy stuff from T: to M: it has to bring to through my computer which takes FOREVER!!!!

 

Would love to figure out a way around this.  I downloaded 11gb of old TV Shows for my kids and it's taking 40 min to copy it from one directory to the other within the Linkstation because it has to travel from the linkstation to my computer and back to the linkstation.  My Linkstation and my PC are both on Gigabit but I can't seem to get gigabit speed out of it either.

does it support SFTP mode for your share in Linkstation Live? It supports unix mv command when both source and dest available in SFTP. I got a Linkstation Duo, it works using above method.

SFTP is secure FTP just like HTTPS is to HTTP, different protocols but same general idea

Thanks for the reply.  Are we saying that the mv command can accomplishing moving files even within a linkstation hard drive, using SMTP?

 

I know the above stated goal was to move files to another hard drive using unix, but even this kind of interaction with the linkstation would be useful.

That's an entirely different protocol than SFTP and we are unaware on copying files using Unix.  That is unfortunately not within the scope of support for this device.

The solution seems pretty obvious to me. I assume with a Live you only have one physical drive?

 

If so, then simply map a Network Drive Letter to the ROOT of the NAS, and then open 2 explorer windows, both starting at the same drive letter. Drag and drop

 

The drive mapping in Windows is simply that - a mapping. You can create and delete them at will. Or am I missing something here?

The NAS won't let you map to just it's IP address though.  That's the fatal flaw unfortunately.

Hi.

 

I just had the same question, and googling for it brought me here.

 

I solved it prett easily:

 

- Open two explorer Windows

- Navigate to your NAS in both windows using the Network Path (NOT the mapped drive); Usually \\[NameofyourNAS]

- Further navigate to the source folder in one window and the target folder in the other window

- CTRL-X (Cut) the files/folders from the source folder

- CTRL-V (Paste) the files/folder in the source folder

 

Couple of seconds later: Everything's done.
