LS500GL shuts down by itself
« on: December 05, 2011, 11:56:56 AM »

I have a problem with my LS500GL network storage with latest firmware 1.15

It's on a home network of 6 PC's and laptops all running XP SP3

I have two Buffalo network storage drives

My main mapped storage drive is a LSCH500L and it operates without any issues

My other network drive is a LS500GL and it is only used as a nightly backup device for the LSCH500L
It used to be my main mapped network hard drive until I got the LSCH500L

The LS500GL just shuts itself off and beeps

This has been happening since I got the LS500GL drive several years ago

This can happen at any time of the day or night and seems to be random

Sometimes it will go a couple weeks without shutting off, sometimes twice in one day

It is on a UPS and so this is not a blinking power issue

3 times this last week in the middle of the night I wake up to hear the drive beeping

I get up, hit the button on the front twice, it boots up and is fine again till the next time it decides to shut itself off

When I got the new LSCH500L, I reformatted the LS500GL because of it's new role as a backup device and thinking that maybe something was wrong with some of the sectors.

The format did not help or change anything, the drive still shuts itself off when it feels like it

I have email notification turned on, but I never get any email errors from the drive saying that someting is wrong (the email test do work)

Anyone ever hear of this situation before?

Thanks for any help.

I have an update

I formatted the drive and copied all my data over to it again

It ran for two days without any problems

But just now, the  LS500GL is sending me emails about hard drive read problems

The drive is still up and spinning and seems to be working

I did not have to reboot

I just did a disk check and the drive does not report any disk error issues

Should I still do what was recomended above or should I just replace the hard drive inside?

I am not opposed to resetting and all that, but I have updated the firmware two times since it was new and this problem has happened on all 3 firmwares

And so, I am doubtful that this is a firmware issue.

Doing a disk scan in the control panel does show and hard disk poblrms, so it's some erratic thing that happens now and then.

Since I cannot be without a proper nightly backup of all my data, I decided to just try and hunt up another NAS and fool around with the LS500GL later

I don't use any of the other features on my Network storage devices, they are only used as data storage and backups of other network storage devices
So I don't need all the other fancy stuff included.

I found a new LS-CH500L Network Hard at B&H for $92

I already have one of these and it has worked perfectly from day one and so I decided to get another one

And so, the new stoarge unit is on the way to me
