unable to connect TeraStation iSCSI to ESX or any linux host.
« on: October 01, 2008, 07:39:49 PM »

Hi all,

when I start the iSCSI service on the TeraStation, i get the following errors.

ietd: unable to create server socket (Address family not support by protocol) 10 1 6!

ietd: connection closed

These are the errors I find in the logs.  I can connect to windows PCs but not to any linux systems.  I bought this thing for VMware ESX server.  But it does not work.

Please if you have any suggestion please let me know, that or I may have to return.  I have google the error message, it seem that other linux distro. iSCSI can get this error.

Thanks,

Nick

Right now the only initiator that VMware ESX that works with our iSCSI device is the ESX 3.0.0. Which iSCSI initiator were you using? when you recieved this error?

Thanks for the reply.  The ESX server I am using is 3.5.0,82663 .  When I add the iSCSI Target (Buffalo iSCSI device) to the ESX configuration, I see those two errors come up in syslog from the terastation.  In ESX I see no error messages, and I don't see any storage device added.

Just one more question, is the network type for the VM machine running bridged or NAT?

also, what OS is the VM itself running?

Sorry, you are missing the issue.  I'm tring to get VMware ESX server (Linux platform) connected to the Buffalo iSCSI Device.  There are no VM's involved in this issue.

The error is bewteen ESX and buffalo's device.

Do you know of any plans to support ESXi with this device?

Are there any versions of linux that will connect the iSCSI device?

Wooo Hooooo !!!

Bit the proverbial bullet and bought the iSCSI 2TB and low and behold its now running as an iSCSI SAN for my vmware ESXi enviornment.

So yes to all that care, the iSCSI Terastation does work with VMware ESXi. (The free one)

While I have been off this issue for months now. I was kind of hoping that people got this working with some level of detail on how they did? Below is my configuration, and I am still unable to connect ESX (using the iSCSI software initiator) to a TeraStation IS iSCSI (TS-RIGL/R5 F/W 1.01).

Configuration:

  • ESX 3.5.0, 123630
  • Both Service Console and VMKernel port groups are configured with IP addresses in the Same VLAN. 10.10.0.(2, and 12) <-- Althought if this was not the case, and we were unable to connect because of this, that would have to be a bug. IMO
  • iSCSI Software Client is enable of the firewall.
  • iSCSI Initiator is enable and configure with an IQN
  • Send Target point to the ip address of the TeraStation 10.10.1.100
  • TeraStation is a 4 TB Firewire 1.01

Also, the problem is still the same, i am unable to see the LUN and create a datastore on that LUN from the VIC. Here is the output of the esx server:

root@ipqesx01 root# vmkiscsi-tool -L -l vmhba32

Target iqn.2004-08.jp.buffalo:NP-ISCSI-001D73262A48:NP-Backup:

OS DEVICE NAME : vmhba32:3:0
BUS NUMBER : 0
TARGET ID : 3
LUN ID : 0

root@ipqesx01 root# vmkiscsi-tool -T -l vmhba32

NAME : iqn.2004-08.jp.buffalo:NP-ISCSI-001D73262A48:NP-Backup
ALIAS :
DISCOVERY METHOD FLAGS : 0
SEND TARGETS DISCOVERY SETTABLE : 0
SEND TARGETS DISCOVERY ENABLED : 0
Portal 0 : 10.10.1.100:3260

Please let me know if anyone has got this to work. Thanks for your time and help,

Nick

had the same problems as described above.

buffalo terastation ii 4tb rackmount iscsi, model TS-RIGL/R5, fw 1.01.

using lvm and creating a logical volume not over 2000 GB worked for me!

I see that this is a somewhat older post and I'm hoping that Buffalo is functional with newer versions of VMWare for the iSCSI product.  I had to move quickly to purchase some storage for a project I'm working on and I picked up a TeraStation Pro iSCSI box, but I can't get ESXi 4.0 to see it.

If I can't make it visible, I'll have to return the product.  Is there any way to make this work?

Thanks -
Soren

sdiel - I was looking over some internal documentation and it is mentioned that this device will work with VMWare ESX version 3.0.0 however I have no records on whether it will work on ESXi 4.0 or not. Since there is no firmware update currently available for these units (no ETA on a release either) I would safely assume that these devices work with the same environments that they were compatible with upon their rollout. Sorry.

Sorry folks,

I dont follow this forum so never came back to check the status.

Recently, i had a failed drive on my box so I had it replaced but some how along the way the terrastation got dropped from the ESXi 3.5 update2 machine, and would not re-connect.

I tried getting the terastation connected to a windows server also, but that failed too.

I had to do a full factory reset of the terastation in order to get it working again with the ESXi host.

I've since done an upgrade to ESX4 update1 with patches and all is working fine.

I have screenshots of my setting but no way to attach them here.

If i get the time at home and there is a demand, ill setup a photbucket type account and link em in.
