access hard drive that's been pulled out the linkstation

My box finally died after many years, i took the hard drive out and hoping to see if i can recover any data on it. I read about booting from a Unix startup CD, is that the only way to do so? I don't have any desktops anymore. I just have a windows 7 laptops, are there any ways to see if the hard drive is still good? thanks in advance

You can use a program in windows called UFS explorer to read the disks that are in a XFS format.
