Linkstation XHL USB Backup Problem
« on: February 21, 2011, 03:15:06 PM »

I have a backup scheduled to run from my linkstation XHL onto an external 250Gb Western Digital Passport USB drive each evening.  The backup runs in incremental mode so that old files are removed, and new ones added as my linkstation files are modifed each day.  The problem is that the backup works fine for a while (maybe 1 or 2 weeks), and then I start getting rsync errors such as the following

-------- BEGIN BACKUP 2011/02/21 20:30:11 disk1/Home_Share -> LS-XHLF5B@usbdisk1 --------
sending incremental file list
./
backuplog_201102211849.txt

rsync: readlink "/mnt/usbdisk1/Pete/Games/TEXTURES/2CO.UTX" failed: Input/output error (5)

rsync: recv_generator: failed to stat "/mnt/usbdisk1/Pete/Games/TEXTURES/23D.UTX": Input/output error (5)
rsync: recv_generator: failed to stat "/mnt/usbdisk1/Pete/Games/TEXTURES/51Textures.utx": Input/output error (5)

The USB drive is formatted with XFS, I've tried reformatting it, which solves the problem for a few days before the error comes back again.  I was originally experiencing the problem using firmware v1.10, but I updated to v1.40 and the problem remains.

Any ideas on how to solve this would be much appreciated as it really is vital that I have a backed up system given the large amount of files that would be lost in the event of a disk failure on the XHL!

What kind of files are the UTX files? Maybe there is some kind of incompatibility with those files. Would you be willing to PM me a copy of those files so that I can test them out on my Linkstation?

UTX files are texture files for a game installation, but that is definitely not the problem, same problem a couple of days ago but with other file types

sending incremental file list
./
