Because the purpose of this application is to help you use buffalonas.com to connect your iPhone to your files on your Linkstation on Terastation through WebAccess.

If that's the case, the application's purpose is hobbled.  Why should it be designed to help people who choose to use buffalonas, while ignoring those of us with static IP's, or with services such as DynDNS who have no need for (or desire to use) buffalonas.com?

I can access my NAS's webaccess feature remotely by entering http://my.dyndns.domain in a browser's URL box, but the iPhone app doesn't support that; it asks for my buffalonas device name.  Pity.

Why not just open the app up to be able to use TZO, or NOIP, or dydns?

Exactly!  If a person could enter a domain name other than buffalonas, along with a port number, the app would be of use to people who don't need buffalonas.com to find their network.
