using rsync to backup to Terastation
« on: October 15, 2010, 07:20:29 AM »

I'm trying ot use rsync to backup a Pc to a TS-HTGL/R5 (F/W 1.35) but cannot access the folders that are created on the TS.

Rsync runs sucessfully and reports that it has copied files. I'm happy that it is working OK. The backed up folder appears on the Terastation, but I cannot open it, must be a permissions problem I think... At the moment ther are no access restrictions on the share. If I copy the folder to my desktop, it is empty!

Anybody have any experience in  this?

cheers,

Jo

Which folder are you backing up to on the NAS?  Was the folder created in the root directory of the file structure?

I created a shared folder adn denoted it as 'Disc Backup' on its config.

There are instrucitons describing it here

The backups appear to be created in the shared folder, but I can't access thwem . Must be a permissions problem, but I can't chnge thse folders' permissions, only the share that they are in.

What is the exact error you get when you try to access?

sorry, hit 'accept' rather tan 'reply'

No error message, folder just apears empty when I open it. If I copy folder from TS to desktop and look at properties, its 0 bytes.

I would have though this was a common issue...

You ever get any resolution to this? I was using --chmod=a=rwx prior to firmware 1.55 (TS-XEL) but now it looks like the umask of the user executing rsync has changed to probably 0022 and removes the write permission for anyone else. I would also have thought that anyone actually backing NAS's via rsync would have this problem on their backup NAS since any new files created by rsync would be owned by the user running rsync and now have no write permission.
