Terastation Pro TS-HTGL/R5 with UPS
« on: August 16, 2010, 05:29:57 AM »

Hi there,

I have a few questions I want to ask regarding the Terastation we have and UPS.

We have a TS-HTGL/R5 (firmware 1.33 which I believe is the latest) and APC Smart-UPS 1500 and was wondering if the Terastation supports both the USB and Serial connections with the UPS in question?

From what I read in this thread:

http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Solved-Storage-Threads/Terastation-quot-classic-quot-UPS-recommendations/m-p/85

It says Serial but not USB so for now I am assuming only Serial is supported (with the smat-ups series)

How would I get this to work? Can I buy any serial cable from amazon for example and plug it in from the NAS to the UPS, configure it using the web interface and leave it? Is there anything else that would need configuring; for example, telnetting into the NAS to configure parameters?

Thank you in advance!

That is an option to get a hold of the cable.  As for the setup, basically yes, connect the UPS, log into the TS setup the device and its settings and leave it be to do its thing

So you can confirm that the USB cable will not work with the APC smart-ups 1500?

Hi,

After plugging in a serial cable and changing the settings in the NAS to reflect the APC UPS, I checked the NAS system log and saw the following:

Aug 17 12:24:31 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[7971]: [Web] UPS status was changed
Aug 17 12:24:31 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[7971]: [Web] Change value : ups.ups=
Aug 17 12:24:31 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[7971]: [Web] Change value : ups.ups_portshutdown=
Aug 17 12:24:31 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[7971]: [Web] Change value : ups.ups_maker=

It seems as if the values are blank - what can I do to fix this?

The only settings that can be supported would be the ones within the GUI.  Anything that would be changed utilizing ACP Commander or the like would not be supported and would cause the warranty to be voided.

I haven't used APC commander... I used the settings within the GUI under: Maintenance --> UPS settings.

To check the log, I proceeded to: System status --> Log information --> System log.

Again, this is what I see in the log:

Aug 20 09:58:00 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[17066]: [Web] UPS status was changed
Aug 20 09:58:00 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[17066]: [Web] Change value : ups.ups=
Aug 20 09:58:00 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[17066]: [Web] Change value : ups.ups_portshutdown=
Aug 20 09:58:00 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[17066]: [Web] Change value : ups.ups_maker=

The settings in the NAS pane are as follows:

Synchronize with UPS - Enable
UPS Connection Type - UPS dedicated port (APC Style)
Shutdown Condition when Power Failure - Shutdown TS after 60 seconds
UPS Behavior After TeraStation has Shutdown - Alive
UPS Recovery Function - Greyed out

Chances are the device doesn't mesh with the UPS fully.  Not sure of what else could be done aside from power cycle the NAS.

I have power cycled the NAS (I assume by this you mean shutdown and start up again) and still not getting any where.

Below is a snippet of the log file in the NAS after disabling UPS and re-enabling it:

Aug 23 11:52:02 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[16329]: [Web] Change value : ups.ups_maker=
Aug 23 11:52:15 LONDON-FS01 TeraStation PRO[16329]: [Web] UPS status was changed

I'm sorry, I have been looking into this problem but the only thing that I can come up with is the UPS and NAS don't fully mesh to the point where recovery is an option.  According to the values shown it looks as if the UPS isn't being fully recognized by the NAS hence the UPS_maker= variable being blank.  The UPS is being detected but is being treated as a generic.  I apologize again with the delay.

So what do you advise I do?

P.S. No one has yet confirmed whether the USB connection would work between the two?

Just wondering if you ever got this resolved or confirmed anything.  I've got the same issue.  My thought is to just try unplugging the power from the UPS and see if the Terastation will power down.  I will try this in a bit and report back here - waiting for a bunch of data to finish copying to the device.

Nope, just unplugging it didn't start the TS shutting down.  Annoying, I'm using an ES model APC which according to the thread you referenced can use USB and if I look at the USB properties in the web interface, it sees the correct Make/Model of the UPS but like with yours, the log has blanks for the UPS info.

Again, we don't have a list of fully supported UPS devices as there are too many out there to be tested and debugged.  If the log is showing blanks where the UPS info should be then chances are (at best) that the UPS will just shutdown the TS.  Most modern UPS devices use a USB connection instead of a serial connection, however we can't debug every UPS out there with a USB connection.  My best suggestion would be to update to the latest firmware and re-init the device with the UPS attached, but even then a successful result isn't guaranteed.
