TS-RIGL/R5 F/W 1.01 Question It's a 8T ISCSI RackMount
« on: December 15, 2009, 12:57:32 PM »

I'm following the steps to setup the terastation but now I'm stuck when it says to  "Your ISCSI TeraStation now appears as a hard drive in
Disk Management, but it’s not usable yet. Double-click on the black bar above it".  I never see the ISCSI listed as a harddrive.

How do you add it to your network?  Want to use it to save backups from another terastation backup and to do a monthly server backup to it.

Thank you

It won't show as a hard drive in My Computer until you format the volume. Go to Start->Run, enter in diskmgmt.msc, and hit OK. You should see the volume and be able to create a partition on it.

The iSCSI Terastation is not like the regular Terastations... You won't be able to directly access the same volume from multiple computers, and you won't be able to back up a Terastation to it.

The only way to use the iSCSI TS as a network location is to mount the volume on a server, then share that volume using the server's File and Print Sharing capability.

Hi Colin137,

You said "You should see the volume and be able to create a partition on it"  This is where I get stuck.  I never see the terastation in disk mangement.  The Terastation is on the network and I can ping to it but thats it. I can access it through web access.   Does the Terastation need to be connected directly to a PC instead?

Thanks

What version of Windows are you using? Try using Microsoft's iSCSI initiator, it's a free download on their site.

I assume when you say you can access it through "web access", you in fact mean that you can get to the web interface. If that's correct, then the network communication is working. Make sure the Terastation is on the same subnetwork as the PC, and that there are no firewalls blocking communication.

Hi Colin137,

Windows 2003 SBS is the version of windows am using.

Yes I can access it using web access...I guess I need to format the drives before using them but that's my problem, accessing the drives in disk management.  I never see the drive to format it.

I run the ISCSItool and access it fine but when I click on Disk Management the teraserver is not visible.

Try enabling LVM, then create a volume that's smaller than 2 TB.

The bottom two radio buttons enable/disable the IP address restrictions. From the Help button:

Entering IP Address Limitation
Enter all IP addresses divided by comma (ex. 192.168.11.1,192.168.11.2)
If only one IP Address is allowed, enter one IP address (ex. 192.168.11.1)
All IP address are allowed when nothing is entered.
Entered IP addresses are allowed access

Thank you for the speedy reply.

I'm still having troubles with mounting the terastation to my server.  I would like to share folders on the terastation so these folders are viewable as shared folders.

Try enabling LVM, and set up a volume less than 2 TB in size. Mount with the iSCSI initiator, then see if that volume shows up in disk management.

Hi Colin137,

Did both.  I used the iscsi connector and it connects to the volume I created, about 1 TB and still does not show up in disk management.

That's pretty strange. Try installing the iSCSI initiator on a workstation (XP or something) and connecting there.

Used a Windows XP machine and it worked fine.  Any thoughts about why it won't work with SBS 2003?

I haven't seen any specific problems with SBS. Try restarting the iSCSI service in the Terastation, and if that doesn't help, try renaming the volume and rediscover it with the initiator.
