Buzzing noise from TS-XEL/R5
« on: October 19, 2020, 07:41:48 AM »
Hi all,

I'm starting to hear a loud buzzing noise from time to time from our TS. I suspect it's the power supply. Any suggestions? Would a tear down/can of air cleaning help? Or is that a sign that the PSU is on the way out? Any way I can source a part for this? TIA!

Anyone? Pointers on part availability?

I don't want to have to go this route: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgUGpGsNeXg

buzzing could mean a lot of things. I imagine the pitch/tone/etc gives you some clue about what might be going on.

The first thing I would think of is the fan since it's the main moving part.

These models are pretty dangerous to mess around with since the power supply is exposed once you take the cover off. I don't recommend messing with it unless you know what you're doing.

I've got some pictures of one of these disassembled here:

Hey, thanks for the reply! It definitely seems related to the PSU fan. Was just wondering if a can of air would do the trick, but I'll keep this wiki and your cautionary note in mind!

On the brightside, the fans themselves are just standard 3-wire PWM fans

I went ahead and took off the cover. There was a lot of dust underneath. I got out all the dust I could see, reseated the case, booted up the box again -- lo and behold, no more buzzing!
