WS-Q4.0TL/R5 recovery media
« on: September 17, 2020, 01:02:37 PM »
Hi all

I've got an old WS-Q4.0TL/R5 here which I'd like to use in my home lab as some cheap mass storage. It runs Windows 2003 R2 storage server, but since the disks are all long gone I need recovery media to reinstall on replacement disks.  It's well out of support (got to be 10 years old at least) so I'm fully prepared for support to tell me to get lost, but it seems a shame to see a working bit of kit binned. I would give it a bash with a plain 2003/2008 disk but this thing has no vga port which doesn't help.

So, does anyone have an iso of the recovery CD for WS-QL Windows 2003 they could give me a link to please? I've looked everywhere and can't find it (both the CD in my house, and the ISO online)

Thanks!

It should have a VGA port behind the door on the front. I've never used windows on one of these devices so I'm not sure how dependent it is on the buffalo software to function.

I did create a python library used to communicate with the controller that handles the LCD and buttons, it probably needs some adjustments to work with Windows (using COM2 rather than ttyS1 etc). That can be found here:

Another option is to install the linux-based buffalo firmware. There is a procedure for creating a recovery disk:
https://buffalonas.miraheze.org/wiki/Create_Recovery_Disk_for_Intel-based_Terastation
**you can usually buy one form buffalo support also.

Finally, you can also install Debian Linux on these devices. A custom installer image and information can be found here:

I'll check those links out, thanks.  It definitely has no vga, the hole for the port is blanked off and there's no port on the actual system board.
