LS520D Max. Capacity

Please can anyone tell me whether 2x 6TB hard drives in RAID 1 (total capacity 6TB) inside an LS520D will work or not? The manual specifies "total capacities" and lists the maximum at 8TB, but the fully populated 8TB version of the LS520D is actually 4TB in RAID1 (2x 4TB drives). So, I'm not sure.

In which case, would 2x 8TB in RAID1 work? Has anyone tried it?

Also, Buffalo, PLEASE can you allow us the option to disable the extremely annoying auto generation of picture thumbnails? It's driving me absolutely bananas.

capacity wise it should work just fine with 2x8TB. You'd want to look at the power requirements of the drive and ensure they are similar to the approved ones so that you don't run into heat/power issues.

There may be a 16TB volume limit that applies (I haven't looked closely enough to know for sure).

Does anyone know what drives the capacity limits on these enclosures? I have an older LinkStation DUO (LS-WXLC8A) that has been working like a champ. I wanted to upgrade the drives and was wondering how to confirm the limitation on capacity of drives I can install in this enclosure.

Is it tied to the RAID controller and what size a volume it's able to handle? If so, how can I find out what's supported by my NAS Station?

I will keep in mind the power requirements that were referenced in the comment above.

I'd like to make an 8TB RAID 1 volume on this hardware if possible just for local photo storage backup. I can't find any forums or threads on it.

There isn't a definitive guide but generally speaking these devices have good overall compatibility.

As far as I know all the kirkwood based devices and newer work just fine with 4K sectors, GPT partition tables, and SATA-III which covers most modern drives. The main limitation for all the non-Intel (and maybe latest generation ARM) devices is the 16TB volume limit associated with using a 32-bit cpu with 4k memory pages.

I don't know of any limitation preventing your 8TB RAID1 from working, but no one can really guarantee it will work.

I took the plunge and bought two Seagate IronWolf 6TB drives and it works fine in RAID 1.
