Terastation 3400R Recovery Failure
« on: February 21, 2020, 03:00:26 AM »
Hi,

We inherited a Buffalow 3400R Series NAS which had multiple failed disks. Upon trying to rebuild it we wiped the image off the disks (we assumed it would of just been on a separate ROM).

We are attempting to fresh start the device as we do need to use it.

We have 4 x 4TB disks inserted.
Disks are cleaned in diskpart with no partitions.
USB Boot TS3000 files are on the root of a USB stick and it is in USB 2.0 socket.

We USB Boot the device and hit the Function button to start recovery.
When it gets to 137 System Recovering it sits there for a few minutes looking busy.
The 3 disks all light up and become active.
At this point it seems to be creating it's own partitions on the disks.

Then it fails with 145 Recovery Failed.
The disks now have multiple partitions created on them but no success.

We clean them again and start over. No joy.

Does anybody have any other suggestions on how to get this bit of kit working again please?
The Buffalow Technical support telephone line for the UK has been offline for days.

Many thanks in advance.

I've never tried the USB recovery options on this model. It's been somewhere on my list of things to look at for a while.

Setting up the firmware should be fairly straight forward using a variation of the procedure described in this post:
http://forums.buffalotech.com/index.php?topic=30419.0

You should be able to:
1. blank all the drives and insert them into the device
2. Power on the device, it should boot from the onboard NAND into emergency mode
3. Download the latest firmware updater for the device and enable "debug mode"
https://buffalonas.miraheze.org/wiki/Enable_Debug_mode
4. Enable the debug options to allow formatting/partitioning (all the check boxes)
5. Run the firmware updater, it should do a fresh install of the firmware.

If I remember correctly, all the USB disk for the 3400 series has is the settings and paramaters of the device at the time you make the USB stick.  It doesn't actually boot the device itself.

The 3400 series will boot into emergency mode, no USB is needed for the boot process.

I would wipe the drives again with diskpart.

With a clean set of drives, you should be able to run the firmware updater again from a windows PC in the debug mode.  Use the debug mode with all options checked for update (left side) and config (right side) to format and rebuild.

Thanks both.

Looks like I was over complicating things trying to do USB recovory.

Changed the .ini file for TSUpdater.exe to boot in debug mode. Ticked all the boxes and booted it up on the same network, detected the device and did a firmware update.

I was a little premature with thinking it was fixed.

Ok so I am much further along now thankfully.

Firmware copied over and updated using the TSUpdater.exe.
NAS is up and running and I can see the device in both the TSUpdater software AND the NAS Navigator 2 application.
It's on the latest firmware of 1.92.
I can even browse to it's shared folder in the client Navigator 2 client and that says it has a RAID 0 setup with 14774GB.

However, I cant reach the Settings page via any browser.
It loads what looks like a partial bit of the page (background colour and some faded boxes) but no functionality or login.

I got to this same stage earlier and rebooting the device set me back to square 1.

What should I do, leave it on over night?

The NAS itself on the display just keeps saying the model number and link speeds. Disks activity lights are only flashing briefly now and then.

usually clearing your cookies fixes the blank page issue.

I have had this problem before.  This happened to me when the nas has not fully booted up.  When you turn it on or reboot, you need to wait a good 5 minutes for it to load everything up.

If clearing the cache doesn't work, I would suggest a reboot.
