LS-WV2.0TL. Can't access the NAS.
« on: December 25, 2019, 03:41:09 AM »
Hi,

I've been trying to revive my old NAS and I've followed the instructions at stickied at http://forums.buffalotech.com/index.php?topic=30419.0. I can't seem to access the unit using the no TFTP method.
I'm using blank drives. I've found old links and instructions but, it seem like Buffalo has removed the required TFTP files, firmware, and recovery instructions. I was able to revive this NAS years ago with those instructions but I can no longer find them.

Things of note:
1. I'm using the LS-WV version with no nand.
2. I'm using Parted Magic to prep the drive before putting them into the NAS as per the instructions I linked above.
3. The red light is flashing 6 times rapidly

If there's anything I need to add in terms of details, please let me know.
Thanks

Where did you get stuck?

You can extract the needed boot files using this method:
https://buffalonas.miraheze.org/wiki/Extract_Boot_Files_from_Stock_Firmware

you can use any TFTP utility for the tftp boot provided you set your pc to the proper ip address.

There are some useful links regarding the process here:

I'll try and be brief. I was following the instructions to your guide as best as I could since I'm not very familiar with Linux.
From what I understand:

1. Create a 512mb ext3 partition.
2. Created 2 folders mnt ---> buffalo (sub folder)
3. Extracted the img files initrd.buffalo and ulmage.buffalo (I had 2 version. I tried both) from their respective containers using your list of zip passwords.
4. Placed the 2 required files in the buffalo folder.
5. I then turned the PC off and moved the drive to NAS bay 1.
6. Turned on NAS and waited until the red bottom blinking light repeatedly flashed 6 times in rapid succession.
7. Booted into windows and loaded ini modified LSUpdater  and turned on debug.

This is where I get stuck. Neither LSUpdater and NAS Navigator2 can see my device. I created a static address and can ping the NAS but that's about it.

Sounds like you’re really close. 6 red blinks means it wasn’t able to load the boot files but was able to read the disk/partition (it blinks 7 times if that fails). When it works the white led will flash for a minite or two and finally turn solid.

for this device you need to rename uImage-lsp.5.x.buffalo -> uImage.buffalo which could potentially be the issue.

if you mount the drive in linux again and list the output of:
Code: [Select]
lsblkand
Code: [Select]
ls -l /mnt/buffalo
we should be able to help figure out what went wrong.

Yes, I forgot to mention in my response that I did rename the required files to uImage.buffalo. There were 2 variants of the file. I'm currently on the uImage-lsp.5.x version.

Here's the output of your request:

mount: /mnt/bufalo: mount point does not exist.
root@PartedMagic:/media/sdb1# cp *.buffalo /mnt/buffalo

Update:

I was finally able to get EM Mode to see the NAS. I then proceeded to follow the instructions at http://www.herzig-net.de/prog/?page=unbrick_ls-wxl.
I followed the first step by ticking the boxes "Do not check version", "Rebuild partition Table", and "Force update".

It completed and gave me a reboot option which ended up in an error as stated in the instructions. It basically did not reboot.
My new issue is, after this initial step, it disappeared from my network again. The updater and Navigator can't see the device.
