Where to buy diskless NAS?
« on: November 11, 2019, 11:53:54 AM »
I have a LinkStation whose firmware was corrupted after a brownout, but both of its HDDs check out as 100% fine. Where can I buy just the LinkStation (or analogous) enclosure? Do I just go to eBay, or can I purchase this new?

Which model do you have? Do leds light up when you try to start the device? If so which ones?

For nearly every model the "firmware" is stored on the drives. In most cases firmware problems can be corrected without replacing the device but it depends on the details.

Oh, so  I think I hear you saying that once I've rescued the contents I can probably pop the drives back into the assembly, reformat them, and be back in business?

Buffalo tech support is who gave me the firmware diagnosis. I had a series of brownouts at the house overnight that last the NAS misbehaving. The files are all intact and I'm gradually moving them to a USB drive using a Linux interface.

If the device still powers up it's probably fine, it's definitely worth attempting to re-install from blank disks once you've recovered your data.

There are instructions for doing so in this post:

If you'd prefer you can install Debian rather than the stock firmware on most devices:

My LinkStation is 420; that post reads

LS421D (Not 420 or 410)

Does that mean I'm out of luck?

That just means it doesn’t have a way to re-install from on-board flash memory. If it did reinstalling the firmware would be as simple as pressing a button.

Later in the post in mentions how to load the boot files manually and proceed from there.
