Guys,

I really need help.

I have had this Linkstation for over a year now and has not caused me too much trouble but I've hit the brick wall here.

Today when I turned the power on, it appear to be booting up ok and then gave up. When I looked at the front of the station, the ! light is flashing red 6 times... then stops and flashes 6 times again.

I've checked the manuals and it describes the error as "Hard drive cannot be recognised".

What do I do?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Desi

In the instructions it says to press the FUNCTION key. Is this the Reset button at the back of the unit, cos I don't have anything else that has FUNC/FUNCTION key at the front or back.

Yes, that just means that you have the first hardware version.  Just hold down the init (or reset) button on the back as you boot the unit.  This should boot you into EM mode.

Thanks.

I have followed the procedure to boot into EM mode but what I see is this:

Power light (green) still.

The light below which is of two arrows (in two different direction) continues to flash frequently and stops...

Does this mean it is in the EM?

The only way to confirm it's in EM mode is by going through the NASNAVI

NasNavi is not finding the unit at all. I've plugged the laptop and the Linkstation into a dedicated Hub and allocated a unique ip address to the laptop. Searching for any other device on the hub but nothing...

Im assuming the dedicated IP is a 192.168.11.X?  Most likely it didn't boot into EM mode.  It doesn't sound like it booted up at all...

You can try EM mode again and if it doesn't work try the TFTP solution:

Thanks.

I've connected an ethernet cable straight from the Linkstation to my laptop.

I've allocated 192.168.11.100 to my laptop successfully.

I've downloaded and extracted the software on my laptop desktop.

I'm running the TFTBoot which opens a command prompt window and says "acceoting requests..."

In the instructions, it says:

4.       Boot the device. Wait until it says E04, E06, or System Now Booting before going to the next step.

When I'm doing this the TFTBoot "command prompt" window does not show anything at all.

How can I confirm the step 4 as described above?

If it does not pull the files under accepting requests then you most likely have a bad HDD.  I would contact support for a replacement assuming the units under warranty.

Thanks for your help.

This is a disaster for me now. I've had all the family data and I've not had it backed up anywhere else cos I don't have any other drive as big as that. I've lost trust in these RAID external drives as they're not the answer!!!

Very dissapointed. Even if it was under the warranty it will not retrieve the data and my trust in the product has just lost!

I am sorry for your loss des, but the only true way to preserve the sanctity of your data is to have it backed up in multiple different locations.

If the data is really important contact drivesavers for data recovery.  This will also keep your warranty in tact.
