Linkstation LS-QV8
« on: February 21, 2019, 06:09:06 AM »
My Linkstation starts to initialise with the flashing blue light under the power switch and does this for approximately 30 seconds then it automatically powers off.
What could possibly cause this?

Sounds like what happens if there’s no disk, or blank disks, etc.

Was this device working previously or are you trying to set it up with new disks or something?

If it was prevously working it could be an issue with the boot partition of disk1, changing the order of your disks could help if that’s the case.

Can I swap the order of disks (ie move disk 2 to slot 1) without damaging data? Does each drive have a boot sector?

Yes and yes.

Techically for these device’s it’s not a boot sector. The boot loader in the device’s flash is hardcoded to grab the kernel+initrd from the first partition of the first disk it finds. When the firmware is installed or a disk formatted the first partition of all the disks are joined into a raid1 array which contain those files.

This means if there is something wrong with the first disk or it’s first partion changing which disk the device “finds” first at boot will let it try a different disk’s boot partition. If it turns out something happened to the boot files themselves that problen might be the same for the other disks and you will have a more complicated route to recovery.

I have tried swapping the disks, tried moving each of the disks to slot 1 but still have the same problem.

that narrows down the possible problems a bit.

just to confirm... how recently was this device working and what has changed recently?

How you want to proceed depends mainly on whether you care about the data on the device or now. The easiest way to get the device working again would be to wipe all the drives and let the firmware updater re-partition and reformat the drives for you... but that would also wipe out any data on the drives. If there's something on there you actually want to save it's more complicated.

I just realized you are the same poster who was asking about power supplies for this device the other day. How many Amps is the power adapter you're using rated for?

It's also conceivable that the device is failing to recognize the drives because it doesn't have enough power to spin them up if the power supply isn't sufficient. It could also be that something is wrong with the device itself that is preventing it from recognizing the drives.

when the device is starting up, are you getting green lights next to each drive before it restarts?
