Can't add second drive to LS-WXL
« on: January 31, 2019, 08:08:28 AM »
I managed to add a single 500GB Drive to an LS-WXL using TFTP Boot Recovery 1.53, got into EM mode, updated the Firmware using  LS Updater with modified LSUpdater.ini file and got the single disk running fine. Whenever I try to add a second 500GB disk, The unit fails to boot and gives me a red error light 1 sec plus 0.5 sec. Have tried several drives, no joy. Remove second disk, no problem booting. Anyone know a fix for this? BW, Jeff

Your initial description makes we think it's trying to boot of the drive you haven't initialized yet, if i understood correctly. If so make sure the new drive is blank and make sure it's in bay 2, really just try swaping the drive bays and see if the problem persists.

Your description of the blinking led makes it sound like a different problem entirely. Look at page 193 to see what the LED message is trying to tell you:

Thanks for that. Tried swapping 1,2 and 2,1 but same error: actually I got it wrong, it's two red lights, one 0.5 sec and one 1 sec, repeated every time fan starts and stops (about every 8 seconds). Both discs are fine if left in Bay 1 or Bay 2 on their own (I flashed them both with the LSUpdater). Do I need to format the second drive externally in some way?

I'm slightly confused about what you're describing.

one thing you could try which sidesteps a bunch of troubleshooting is to just wipe both drives and re-run lsupdater with them both installed. lsupdater will handle setting up the system partitions/arrays properly that way.

alternately you can follow the "For Enclosure model users. If LinkStation doesn't Boot after a Hard Drive is installed." guide found at the bottom of the support page:
http://buffalo.jp/support_ap/support/products/ls_wxl.html

It sounds like you may have stumbled into the exact scenario they're talking about.
