Terastation HS-DHTGL1DF Root access?
« on: February 15, 2021, 09:13:08 AM »
Good day to everyone.

I am sure I'll be asking questions previously covered but my search has yet to garner any real assistance.

Many years ago I came to posses a Buffalo Terastation HS-DHTGL1DF which I only ever used and accessed as a home NAS.
Obviously, Windows stopped accessing a while ago with the removal of SMB1 support. Easy workaround.
However, now even my 'nix boxes are having issues.

There are several methods for re-purposing/revitalizing this machine but one thing prevents any of that from happening and that's accessing root as BB 1.1.1 doesn't have su, sudo, setuid etc.

I've reset this device many times and tried all of the commonly shipped root passwords but none work.
I've also tried (unsuccessfully) resetting the password via ACP_Commander.

In the end, my goal is to breathe whatever last bit of life I can back into this device until it finally fails.
Some of you will want to ask "why" or "why not just get a new one" etc.
I could. I may end up doing so. However, this is a "problem" I don't know the answer to yet, would like to solve if possible and I have the time to "waste".

Any assistance will be appreciated.

If this is the model I think it is I'm a little surprised that ACP_commander didn't work.

Try this version if you didn't already, it includes some improvements that sometimes help:

I (somewhat) recently created a Debian installer for this device which can be found here.

Let me know if you run into issues.
