Firmware update fails on HS-DH500GL
« on: January 09, 2018, 08:40:44 AM »
I have been using a HS-DH500GL for nearly a decade, but the 500GB drive is just too small anymore, so I have decided to put a 2TB drive in it (512KB sector size). Using linux, I cloned the partition map of the old drive (with sfdisk), formatted the partitions appropriately (sdb1 = ext3, sdb2 = xfs, sdb5 = swap, sdb6 = xfs), enlarged the main storage partition and filesystem (with gparted), and copied the files from the old drive over to the new drive (using tar to preserve links and permissions). I put the new drive into my Linkstation, but it boots into Emergency mode. It gets an IP address from my DHCP server, and NAS Navigator finds it successfully as device HS-DHGL-EMEE1 at the right IP address and reports that it is in Emergency mode.

However, the firmware updater can't find the device.

I am using the firmware (version 214_102) from this page: http://www.buffalotech.com/support/downloads/linkstation-live-250gb

However, I keep getting the error that device HS-DHTGL can't be found.

I have tried everything recommended in these forums and in the knowledge base.

  • I have tried using the reset button to force the unit to use IP 192.168.11.150 and changed my computer's IP address to be 192.168.11.1
  • I have tried editing the lsupdater.ini file to enable debugging, skip the version check, and /force the update.
  • I have tried running the recommended TSUPdater using /force and as an administrator under Windows 10, and I have also tried using the older update.app available for Mac OS.

Nothing will recognize the device as eligible for firmware upgrade.

What am I missing?

You're trying to install the wrong firmware, not your fault, the Buffalo website is wrong. Try and install this one instead:

http://www.buffalo-technology.com/download_file.php?r=3983
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

This should be fixed on the US website today.

Thank you thank you!

I have wasted hours on this, and you solved my problem with just one link.

For what it's worth. I'm currently updating the firmware using this LSUpdater.exe file under Mac using WINE and everything seems to be working great.

Oops... I spoke too soon. The firmware file you linked to installed with a Japanese web interface. Can you help me find an English one?

Japanese is the units default language so that's why this happens.

There is an option on the JAP GUI to change the language to English.

Choose the second entry (the icon in front looks like a paper page).
Scroll the window on the right side to the bottom and choose to the language of your choice with the next to last listbox.
Click the button at the bottom of the page to save your settings.
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.
