TS5400R0804 Fans are always on and noisy
« on: July 10, 2017, 12:26:24 PM »
I recently got a Terastation 5400R NAS without any disks.  I added two disks and installed Linux on it so far it works but the fans are always on and very noisy.  Is it normal? Some people told me that those Rack-based servers are noisy but I don't expect this NAS type machine is so loud.

Is there any configuration to turn off the fans or automatically turn them off?

Did you install Linux or the Buffalo NAS OS!
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

Linux only. I didn't find Buffalo NAS OS until a few minutes ago. I will try the OS but believe it might not help.

After I installed Buffalo NAS OS, the issue is resolved.  So I have to use that OS only?

If you install Linux / Windows / whatever on the 5000 then there is no software is control the fans and they run at full speed by default.

There is probably a way around it but I wouldn't know myself.

I am having the same issue, I replaced the hard drives then updated to latest firmware and re partitioned with tsupdater via debug mode. I can login to the buffalo OS just like before, however the fans are on max speed constantly, they just stay on max. Is there a temp sensor or setting that I am missing?

Keeps saying can't get temperature by SMART, but then it seems to display the temps just fine. I am on version 4.04-0.03 and I have TS5400RD10.

Too bad it isn't more specific about what these sensor values mean. It makes sense that 2 sensors reading 59C would cause the fans to run full speed. Likewise it would be nice to know what those SMART failures refer to. If the web ui is showing values for all 4 disks it could be referring  to disks that don't exist (this firmware does support devices with more drives).

Earlier in the thread they mentioned installing Linux on these devices, oddly enough I've since created a custom Debian installer for these devices. One of my customizations is a driver patch which allows the fancontrol daemon to automatically control the fan speed based on the temperature sensors.

Oddly enough I only have 4 drives, wonder why it shows 5 different temps? I installed samsung SSDs in this, any reason why they would make this occur with the temps/fans?

That could explain it.

In my TS5800D (running linux) I see the CPU temperature sensors + 1 motherboard sensor. The sensors in your log are probably some mix of drive/CPU/motherboard sensors.

The SSDs could potentially explain a lot. I don't own any samsung SSDs, but of the brands that I own have some that:
  • Report a plausible temperature just like a normal drive
  • Always return 40C as their temperature regardless of their actual temperature.
  • Don't report a SMART temperature at all

If these are returning 59C or nothing (or some mix, I guess) it would explain why the device thinks it's overheating and running the fans on high all the time.

I don't mind the noise, I am more worried about the fans breaking and then the device won't operate due to fan errors. I will try the linux route I think. Thanks!

Personally I would not put SSDs into this unit, there is not really any benefit but instead you get potential issues. Even if you trunk the 2 ports your LAN will still be a bottleneck, standard HDDs will easily get you to the 1GbE limit. Going down the Linux road here is probably a good idea as the Buffalo firmware does not really take SSDs into consideration.
