WZR-1750DHP Version 2.27 downgrade
« on: June 05, 2015, 03:35:27 PM »
Hello,

I have upgraded the firmware to the latest version, and I ended up with a completely different interface, not the DD-WRT one. Another problem is that there is no VPN functionality in the new firmware.

I would like to downgrade, or go through some other procedure that will allow me to switch to a "classic" DD-WRT with its full feature set. What is the proper way to accomplish that?

It sounds like you have flashed to the native Buffalo version of the firmware. Where are you located?

I purchased the router in the USA, but right now I am in Eastern Europe.

I'm in the same boat. I wanted to check out the changes to 2.27 and flashed it to my DHPD only to realize that it's now stuck.

In the readme for 2.27 it stated,

Quote
This firmware is not backward compatible. After updating the AirStation, you will not be able to revert to a version earlier than 2.27.

I understood this to mean AirStation firmware, not necessarily DD-WRT (which are not "earlier").

Needless to say, not impressed by Buffalo's commitment to openness/DD-WRT.

I also purchased in the US (Amazon) and am still in US.

Any options to reverse this?

If you are in the US, contact technical support. They should be able to help you.

There's no problem for me to write an email or call a phone number - but wouldn't it be better if this were public knowledge? There's a thread on DD-WRT forums where many others are facing the same problem.

We must limit access due to licensing agreements.

I have written to the support team via the contact form on the site and haven't heard back from them, not yet. Will post a reply here as soon as there's news on that front.

OK, I hope so. I contacted support yesterday; how long do they usually take to respond?

I got my reply from the support team and they simply said that it cannot be done, without explaining whether this is for technical or "political" reasons. There's no response to my follow-up email, but based on what I've seen so far - this has nothing to do with whether I am in the USA or not, and there's no issue with licensing.

I'm not very happy with this at all. I purchased the WZR-1750DHP because, according to the dd-wrt website, it could be flashed with dd-wrt firmware (it was the final deal clincher for me). When I started up the router, it immediately asked me if I wanted to upgrade, which I did. It was only since then that I noticed this nonsense about not being able to use dd-wrt ever again (or words to that effect). I've never come across this situation before and I would either not have upgraded the Buffalo firmware if I had known this, or more probably, I wouldn't have purchased the router in the first place. This is totally unacceptable to put customers in this situation. If they can't provide a fix, I shall never purchase one of their products again. I feel as though I have been tricked.

If you purchased the router with the standard Buffalo firmware then it is up to the DD-WRT community to provide a version of DD-WRT that will convert the unit. Buffalo did not market or sell that router with the implication that it could be converted to DD-WRT. We do sell a version of that router with DD-WRT pre-installed.

I received a response to my request for support for removing Buffalo's 2.27 off my WZR-1750DHPD and restoring its factory DD-WRT (at least).

Support told me that I was out of luck and they couldn't assist me, because:

Quote
We cannot due to the fact that the firmware cause this to happen on purpose.

So beware of flashing subsequent Buffalo firmware releases on your routers.

What makes this so unacceptable is I wanted to see the quality of Buffalo's own firmware. And frankly the 2.27 release is horrendous.

Plus I though the WZR-1750DHPD was a "DD-WRT" supported model—yet support says tough luck.

Someone from Buffalo was kind enough to reach out to me with a solution, and I was able to restore my 1750DHPD to DD-WRT.

Whew, back in action. Thank you.

Can you please advise how this was done?  I am desperate to get back to DD-WRT!
