drive station sudden data loss
« on: April 24, 2009, 09:14:32 AM »

hi,

i am using the following:

- HD-CEU2 Drive Station 500GB

- on a PC, VISTA 32bit

for the past 6 months now I have been using the drivestation without any problems, in fact I always manually uploaded all my data etc...without making use of the pre-installed software like (memeo,sec-lock ware, turbo usb etc..)

all has been working fine. and i shared this drivestation with my mac, also only manually uploading various files...never using timemachine or other auto backup software

then yesterday, i decided to installthe memo software from the drivestation...so i installed the software to my laptop...BUT not running it and not making use of it.

today, I plugged in my drivestation as usual BUT ALL files on the drivestation were gone...a folder HD-CEU2_200 has completely installed on my desktop with all its content...and the drivestation is empty...only showing drivenavi application but at 0KB

the mycomputer folder initially showed the drivestation with data on it and  100GB available (365GB in use) BUT no folders could be seen when I clicked on the drivestation.

after restarting, the my computer folder now showed the drivestation as completely empty...

now, i am very well aware that no files have been deleted from the drive, nor has the drive been formatted...this process would take some time and make some noise on the drivestation...didnt happen.

further more there does not seem to be any physical problems withe drive, its running smoothly...

i am at a loss why my data is all gone...

can you help out?

Did you install the Buffalo Firmware Update from the web site?

How long did you use the Laptop with installed Memeo and everything was OK?

Double click on the self extracting archive on the drive would have the effect of creating this desktop folder.

100% sure that you or nobody else didn't do it?

Usually, when you set up Memeo it walks you through a profile setup from the get go. If everything was working fine previous to the software install then I would suggest uninstalling it. Secondly, the Memeo software (to my knowledge) does not erase pre-existing data on a hard drive upon a profile setup. Lastly, if the data is in fact gone and you want the best chance of recovering it I would take it to a data recovery specialist.
