LS421DE cannot mount USB hard disk!
« on: August 28, 2013, 09:41:40 pm »
Hi,

I've bought a LS421DE recently. Firmware has been updated to latest v1.11. I've managed to setup 2 1-TB hard disk in RAID1.

When I tried to plug in a 2-TB ext3 formatted USB hard disk (formatted & works in my old LS-WXL) into USB ports (both rear USB2 & front USB3), the drive does not show in the GUI. However, a 2GB thumb drive (FAT32 formatted) works in both USB2 & USB3 ports.

Since firmware v1.11 is meant for LS410, LS420 & LS421DE, is it possible that it is a bug on mounting USB drives in the 2 USB ports?

Is the USB using 2K sector sizes or 512bytes, as far as im aware this unit will work if the USB HDD is NTFS also (upto 2TB) so you can test this.
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

I am having the same trouble with a 2 tb EXT3 HDD connected to either USB port on my 421e. The drive works fine on my LSWV4.0, but does not show up at all in the drive tab of the HTML interface. I am certain this is a bug in the 421e firmware, as (1) I replaced my first 421e with a second one, which has the same issue, and (2) tech support told me that the two ports are on different buses. The odds of having two defective units, with two defective port buses apiece, are about equal to the odds of being hit with lightning, I'd think.

One thing in the OP confuses me, though: i cannot get FAT32 USB sticks to show up at all in the interface drive tab. Another thing in the reply confuses me: How does one change sector size if the drive won't even show up on the drive list?  I tried connecting an NTFS drive that I use with my PC, and it also failed to show up on the drive tab. Would I have to reformat the drive to 2k sector sizes on a PC rather than using the 421e drive tab interface?

In the OP's case, does the HDD show up in the drive tab but fail to operate or is it simply invisible to the firmware? As mentioned, it is the latter in my case, at least on NAS.  (It does show up in drive management on the PC.)

Hi MikeRubin,

My case is exactly like yours where both HDD & FAT32 USB stick do not show up in the drive tab. FAT32 USB stick can be seen in GUI, but HDD is invisible!

I'm 99% sure that it is firmware related because I can manually mount the HDD & manage to use it after root access!

Hi Davo,

The 2TB WD20EARX uses 4KB physical sector size (but logical is 512 bytes). I'm not sure if it is the root cause!

Anyway, I've managed to manually mount the ext3 HDD in Shell. I can see it in remote terminals, but it is invisible in Buffalo's GUI.

Thanks, Wafer. I don't have terminal skills, so I am not able to see or address any USB device at all.

As a matter of interest, is the USB device server enabled on your unit? I had to disable it on mine before it would be recognized in USB Drives section.
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

Hi Davo,

I have tried both USB Device Server "disable" & "enable". My USB harddisk is still not detected.

In fact, I've just plugged in a 2TB NTFS formatted USB external harddisk. Still no joy!

So far, I've tried NTFS, ext3 formatted. Still cannot be detected by the UI!

I have tried the same things as Wafer, but am having no luck with powered drives whether USB Device Server is enabled or disabled.

Indeed, I have been able to manually mount an external HDD connected to the front USB3 port

[root@LS421DE55C usbdisk1]# df -h
Filesystem                Size      Used Available Use% Mounted on
udev                     10.0M         0     10.0M   0% /dev
/dev/md1                  4.7G    763.3M      3.7G  17% /
tmpfs                   249.0M     80.0K    248.9M   0% /tmp
/dev/ram1                15.0M    108.0K     14.9M   1% /mnt/ram
/dev/md0                968.7M    212.6M    756.0M  22% /boot
/dev/md10                 1.8T    159.1G      1.6T   9% /mnt/array1
/dev/sdc2               931.3G    681.6G    249.7G  73% /mnt/usbdisk1  <<<<

Can we raise a bug to Buffalo so that external HDD can be mounted automatically ?
cheers.

Hello. Same problem

Model LS421DE
Firmware Version:   1.31-0.92
Serial Number:   80060334610913

-   USB stick 32Gb FAT32 working as    “USB Device Server” and “USB Drives”

-   USB Seagate Barracuda 1Tb 7200.12 + Sharxroom HDD docking station quickport XT USB 2.0 ---- > working as “USB Device Server”. Not working as “USB Drives”

I try in next formats in 512 Mb partitions and 1Tb(all disk) partitions:
•   dos partition table, NTFS Format.
•   dos partition table, FAT32 Format.
•   dos partition table, EXT3 Format.
•   dos partition table, XFS Format.
•   gpt partition table, EXT3 Format.
•   gpt partition table, XFS Format.

All,

Looking at the [Version History] file in latest firmware 1.34 released on 7Jan2015, Buffalo has not addressed the USB drive mounting bug yet...!

It is very disappointing!
