Buffalo HD-PX500U2/BLK CDFS Removal
« on: October 24, 2009, 05:55:07 AM »

I would like to remove the Buffalo Virtual CD Rom utility CD. Is there a utility or set of instructions on how to completely remove the CDFS partition from the hard drive? I find the extra partition extremely irritating. Other companies such as Sandisk, after receiving heavy public pressure, now offer removal tools for similar systems. Does buffalo offer a similar utility?  The box no manual contain no information about the system. On the other hand Sandisk directly states the U3 in the product description and can be clearly found on the box.

The CDFS partition contains utilities for encrypting and unlocking the drive. There is no way to remove it.

That cannot be correct. The virtual CD software has to "load from somewhere", usually a hidden partition. Most other manufacturers include utilities to remove it.

Examples:

SanDisk USB U3 removal http://apac.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1415

There is a way in windows to disable it.. but that may not be ideal, (using diskmgmt.msc) and then right clicking the Virtual CD rom and saying delete...

(I see Buffalo have also done this on the HD-CXU2 drives !!!!!)

Couldn't agree more - The Removal Util should and needs to be provided.

Surely it's your customers choice if they want part of their drives used up by software that they may not use or indeed need.

Do the right thing - and follow the example of U3

Provide the removal tool for download so we can rid ourselves of the CDFS partition once and for all and reclaim the full space on the drive.

Unfortunatley I ended up just returning the drive. I loved the drives design with the built in USB cable. Smart. Unfortunately the CDFS partition without the ability to remove it was a deal breaker.
