HD-HTGL/R5 failed to update to ver 2.16
« on: August 01, 2009, 01:47:47 AM »

I have a HD-HTGL/R5 with 4 x 160GB HD's.  Currently it has the original 1.12 firmware when I purchased it quite a while ago.  I downloaded and tried to apply the firmware udpate and got the following error from the NASUpdater:

"It failed to obtain the rotational speed of the fan. : 0xFFFFFFFF

Updating is aborted"

if I start retrying I get this message:

"It failed in the commad. : -1 Commands of 1 : echo " >> //tmp/fan.pl

Do it retry?"

so in the end I couldn't get it to apply.  I am now curious if my fan has died in the unit.

You can try the force firmware procedure.

  • Download and extract all files from the firmware update. DONOT download the firmware to the NAS itself. The file is to be executedon a PC separate from the device. Running the firmware update from thedevice itself can lock out the NAS and make it unreadable.
  • Open up the .ini file (usually something like LSUpdater.ini) in a text editor program. It should read something like this:
[Application]
Title = BUFFALO LS-GL Updater Ver.1.03 w/Debug
WaitReboot = 240

[Target]
ProductID = 0x0009
Name = LS-GL
Password = password

[Flags]
VersionCheck = 1
 Then go ahead and run the updater.

Hello penguinhat,

Thanks for the suggestion, but by removing a few of the Title items and adding the password id didn't allow me to force it in.

Here is the original .ini file:

[Application]
Title = BUFFALO HD-HTGL Updater Ver.2.16
WaitUpdate = 500
WaitReboot = 120
WaitFormat = 300

[Target]
ProductID = 0x2001
Name = TeraStation

[Flags]
VersionCheck = 1

Here is the modified version per your comments:

[Application]
Title = BUFFALO HD-HTGL Updater Ver.2.16 w/Debug
WaitReboot = 240

[Target]
ProductID = 0x2001
Name = TeraStation
Password = password

[Flags]
VersionCheck = 1

Unfortunatly I still get the same errors.

Even by changing the following I get the same errors:

[Flags]
VersionCheck = 0

So I have tried resetting the unit, and went down and verified the fan in the back is indeed working fine.

Are older Firmware updates posted somewhere?  Basically, I would like to try to update to something inbetween what I have on the unit and what I am trying to update too.  I think this might alow me to update to the latest version.

You need to add the debug option!  Please go to the 2nd FAQ to do the force firmware.

JoshC,

thanks for the feedback.  I wasn't sure if I could follow that faq completely since the updater looks different then that faq described.

Unfortunatly I still get the same error even with the debug=1 added.  Here is the ini file I used:

[Application]
Title = BUFFALO HD-HTGL Updater Ver.2.16
WaitUpdate = 500
WaitReboot = 120
WaitFormat = 300

[Target]
ProductID = 0x2001
Name = TeraStation

[Flags]
VersionCheck = 0

[SpecialFlags]
Debug = 1

Again here is my error message:

 "It failed in command : -1
Commands of 32 : echo -n 'b752675d73b0697671d1009dab56a5' >> //tmp//fan.pl

Do a retry?"

Did you download the firmware wireless?  If you did download it hard wired.  Retry it if you did download it hard wired.  If your getting the same error, give out Tech Support line and we can look into this issue further with you.

Hello JoshC,

That was it,  Sorry I didn't think of going to hardwire sooner, but I didn't expect that to be the issue I was having.

connecting to a hardwire allowed me to udpate without issue.

thanks,

chris
