Slow file transfers with LS-L500GL
« on: June 13, 2009, 06:58:50 PM »

Hi

I have an LS-L500GL (firmware 1.04-0.34) conneted to my BT Homehub router (with a static IP address).

I'm connecting to it wirelessly (54Mbps) from a Dell desktop (Windows XP SP3) and Dell laptop (Windows Vista).

I'm getting file transfer rates of < 2MB/s which is making it virtually unworkable to use the Linkstation

If I connect the Lionkstation to either PC directly then it's really fast (but then it can't be accessed on the network)

I tried updating to the latest firmware (2.01) but the installer just hangs waiting for a response from the Linkstation.

Has anyone got any suggestions on

a) how to get the firmware upgrade to complete

b) to improve the performance

Thanks

OK got the firmware upgraded (following a reboot of the Linkstation)

But that has had not effect on the file transfer performance.

Try a Force Firmware update per the FAQ in this forum.

Try checking your router's configuration or check if there are newer firmwares for your router.

I had the same problem before and finally tried using another router and speed became good, could even watch videos using wireless.

Thanks for that Josh

I did not need to force the firmware update as the update took on its own after I'd rebooted the box

Thanks tanjl

The router firmware is up to date (it's a BT router and so auto updates itself)

Router speed does not appear to be the problem as I can access the internet etc. with no performance problems.  (In fact I can upload files faster to my ftp site than I can to the NAS box)

You can also try initializing the device through the web interface.  Sometimes I have also seen a simple reboot fix transfer speed issues.

Thanks PCPiranha

Any clues how to initialse the device through the web interface.

I can find no documentation on that.

If I browse to the ip address I only get options for Web Access

IN a further update I reconnected the drive directly to my PC and even then I'm only getting data transfer rates of <7MB/s

Sorry,  I was thinking of the original LS not the EZ.  Have you tried holding down the init button (on the back of the unit above the fan) for 25 seconds?  This could clear up any configuration inconsistancies and give us a better idea of what the problem is.

Just tried the reset

Still no difference <2MB per second transfer speeds

What are the speeds when both computer and LS are hardwired to the router?

Forget the router, plug it directly into the PC and set a static IP on the NIC card, then test the connection. To be honest, 2Mbps on a 100Mbit wireless connection is about average! Especially using Vista!
PM me for TFTP / Boot Images / Recovery files  LSRecovery.exe file.

Hi Davo When I connect the NAS directly to the laptop I'm getting about 7MBs transfer speeds which does not seem particularly fast compared to the 20-30MBs I'm getting for the local hard disk.

I guess you are getting almost max. speed. LinkStation EZ doesn't use highend hardware. Thus, 7MB/s is pretty normal. What ever you do, even you use gigabit ethernet connection, you'll get around 7MB/s because of hardware limitation.

If you are interested in faster transfer speed, try new LinkStation Pro. It's really fast. I recently changed from LinkStation Live to LinkStation Pro, the difference is significant.

From the above tests you can see that the bottleneck is occuring through the router. 7MB/s on a 100mbit network is actually a pretty good speed.

You get 20-30MB/s because this is the internal drive which is connected direclty to your motherboard. It does not seem to be an LS issue to be honest.

You will never get these kinds of speeds through a 100MBbit network.
