Vista Print Server - Not working
« on: June 19, 2009, 07:40:01 PM »
Hi - I have a LS Quad and a Brother HL-4040CN network printer, attached to the LS Quad using a USB cable.  All of my XP PC's and laptops are attaching and printing fine.  The Vista laptop shows that it is attached to the print server and has installed the printer, but the system hangs whenever I try to print.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks - John

You installed the Vista drivers for the printer on the computer correct?

Yes - that's correct.  I have the shared folders mapped as network drives, do I need to do something similar for the print server?  If I go to the "Network" folder in explorer and click on the LSQL1A9, there is a folder named "printers" AND the "\lp" that both are displayed.  The "lp" icon says "Network printer" and the "printers" icon says "Add, reomove, printers, etc..."

Make sure it is not a multi function printer and that it supports postscript (Im not sure this printer does).

It's not a multi-function printer.  I'll check on the PS - is that a Vista-specific issue?  The printer is working great on the XP PC's (3 of them).  For some reason the Vista PC is having trouble with the print server or the printer.  ALthough it shows as ready, every program I try to print from hangs.

We have actually had many printers that do not support postscript work-- it's just not something that we support.  If it's only the vista, it could be a driver issue as well.  Ill see if I can find anything for you.

Thanks - The strange thing is that the print server (\lp) shows as online and ready and the install routine worked the same on the VIsta PC as the XP machines.  I'll also check the Brother website (again) to see if they have Vista-specific issues discussed.

Please look into that, it's a possibility.  I'm still looking but I found this:

Hi - I found this:KB#000095 - Vista and Print Server

A note for step number 3:

3. A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the computer nameprinter name.

I tried "\\LS-QL1A9\lp" and I get an error stating that path already existed.  It worked when I used the IP address.
