very slow backup
« on: April 17, 2009, 08:25:49 AM »

Terastation II, with 4 x 1GB drives, newly rebuilt RAID 5 array. Latest firmware (2.14)

Connected to a Windows XPSP3 box via gigabit switch, Both devices have a Gigabit card.

Backups run extremely slowly, on the order of 1Gb per hour. Size of test backup job is 50Gb.

Have eliminated the backup program and its settings as the cause of the issue since the same job will backup to USB in about three hours.

Ethernet cables are new and known good.

Switch works fine for every other use (streaming media, etc.)

Not sure what to look at next. Any ideas?

Thanks.

(more subjectively, this NAS has been back to Buffalo once already for hardware problems.)

Well, the only conclusion I can draw is which network protocol are you using to connect to the device? NetBIOS (hostname) or IP address? Also, what ethernet frame size are you using (Network settings in web admin)?

Connecting via IP (share for backup is a mapped drive: \\ipaddress\sharename)

using default frame size

OK, that was a money answer.

I set ethernet frame size to Jumbo and things are moving along swimmingly.

Thanks very much.
