When formating the hard drive from within the GUI about how long should that take on a 500 Gig drive? more than 6 hours?

This process should take less then 6 hours, reset the unit by holding in the init button. Then reformat the drive.

Also make sure the firmware is up to date.

I talked to Tech support last night, They had me format "rebuild the partion tables" using the updater program and flash the firmware again and all my problems went away!

   how did you rebuild the partition tables using the updater?

After starting the updater right click on the top blue bar then select debug, when the menu opens select "rebuild partition table" and run it.
