Link Station Pro - defective harddisk

Unfortunately yesterday my Linkstation ended on the floor. Now the harddisk is making bad noises and wont go ready ( 1 long + 6 short flashes). My question is now, is it possible to change the harddisk with a similar/different model or is there special restrictions embedded in the firmware (2.10).

It's not something the Linkstation was designed to do, as part of it's image it requires to boot resides on the disk.
