LS-CHL backup options
« on: December 30, 2008, 09:34:28 PM »
   Hi. Does someone have a good understanding of what the various backup options are? I have dedicated the 500 gig unit as my media storage device and I have attached an external 500 gig usb unit to it. Formated it as XFS and started a Normal Backup. More than 30 hours later it's almost done. It looks like it simply copied the files over which is perfect, that's all I want. A bit disappointed about the speed though. Now there are a few options of "overwrite" backups and I have trouble figuring out which is best to pick. I would like to have this unit backup weekly but only the changed files (synchronize). Would Overwrite backup (Complete/Differential) work. Would that add the new files, modify the changed files and delete the files that no longer exist? I hope someone has experimented with this cause at these speeds it might take a while to find out.

   If A computer is logged onto the NAS but isn't accessing any files when the backup starts, will that cause the backup to fail? or only if a computer is actively accessing files...

Neither should cause the backup to fail. When the backup is in progress, the performance of the device will be degraded (significantly if there are a lot of files to be backed up).

I can't understand why my backup keeps failing, I get this error:

 -------- BEGIN BACKUP 2008/12/06 23:30:01 disk1/ADWORK -> TRON@usbdisk1 --------
building file list ...
188564 files to consider
rsync: mkdir "/mnt/usbdisk1/_backups" failed: No space left on device (28)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at main.c(509) [receiver=2.6.8]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (8 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(463) [sender=2.6.8]
-------- END BACKUP 2008/12/06 23:34:23 disk1/ADWORK -> TRON@usbdisk1 --------
I have the usb disk set to overwrite the existig backup, Isn't tht the right way to set it? To only change the files that are different?

Try formatting the USB drive, then perform the backup again. Select "overwrite backup: differential backup" as the option.
