USB Drive read only - cannot change permissions
« on: January 01, 2009, 01:27:41 pm »

I have a 1 TB Linkstation Pro Duo with a 1 TB external USB drive attached. I can access the remote drive but cannot get access to do anything but read the data on the drive. I have tried to change the permissions but am not permitted. I have hooked the USB drive directly to my computer and have total access to it. I have tried to set permissions in this mode but as soon as I hook it back up to the LinkStation, permission reverts to read only. The owner is listed as "root (Unix User\root)" and I can't change that.

Any suggestions.

Make sure you format the hard drive in XFS using the web interface of the NAS.

Hi, I have the same read-only-issue but with an external 500GB-HD with USB connected to the Linkstation.

I saw Paul's suggestion so I went into reformat the external 500GB-HD using XFS format via the NAS Web Interace, but the issue still exist.

Any more suggestions?

Do you have access restrictions enabled?

I have the same problem, a 750GB USB drive attached but receive an "access denied" any time I try to write to the drive or change permissions. Here is the setup information:

Win2K - Logged in as local admin

LinkStation (LS) HD-HG250LAN Firmware V1.34 (US)

Seagate Free Agent 750GB drive, formatted as EXT3 via LS GUI

Read the owners manual front to back, searched the Knowledge Base and Forums

Rebooted Link Station after format of USB drive, PC several times, logged in to LS via web GUI as root, permission change attempted via Windows Explorer as both local and root

"USB drive as shared folder" allowed in LS menu USB Setup

USB drive recognized by LS (usbdisk1) and visible to PC via mapped share and Network Map, but read only allowed

Backup of LS shared folder via LS GUI to USB disk failed

Any suggestion you may provide will be appreciated.

I am having the same problem--can't write to USB drive attached to a linkstation.

LinkStation model: LS-WTGL/R1-V3 F/W 3.07

USB HardDrive is also a Buffalo: WDC WD1600BB-00G (160G) formatted as FAT file system

I have enabled Read/Write on the drive in the linkstatsion web app and logged into the share using the user i set up. Connecting from a MacBook using Moc OS X 10.5.6.

Is it really true that i have to reformat the drive in a different file system? That is a pretty big drawback to using USB drives in a LinkStation if true.

Try formatting the drive with the unit.

Can't speak for Nilsey, but my USB drive has already been formatted by the Linkstation, via the web GUI.

If a solution can be uncovered in the next week or so I will assume my now obsolete Linkstation drive (less than 3 years old, ain't forced obsolescence great?) is not suitable for this function. I'll just reformat the USB drive to NTFS and return it to its original state as an external PC drive. What a shame, love the drive otherwise.

Try to force the firmware on the unit then set it back to factory defaults from the web gui, (this will not cause any data loss).  Then if it still does not work then format the drive one more time.
