HS-DH500GL Backup to Attached USB
« on: December 21, 2008, 08:35:31 PM »

I have a HS-DH500GL and have attached a 500 GB USB drive to USB1.  The USB drive shows OK.  I would like to backup the HS-DH500GL to the attached USB drive.  When I select Disk Backup I get a window that says 'Searching for Link/Terra Stations' for about 10 seconds then the Login Screen reappears.  I have forced a firmware update with no change.  Any suggestions.

Thanks

Tom

I formated the USB drive EXT3.

Try to reformat the USB drive on the buffalo (from the web interface).

The initial format was from the Buffalo via the web interface.  I will reformat it and see what happens.

No change after reformating EXT3 on the USB drive.

Have you tried it on another USB port on the TS?  Also make sure the firmware is up to date, if you do have to update the firmware then set the unit back to factory defaults from the web interface.

I have forced a firmware update since it showed the current firmware.  I just restored factory defaults and tried the other USB port.  Still getting the same results of searching for about 10 seconds then login screen reappears.

Do you have another hard drive to try?

I am transferring information from a WD 250 external drive so I can reformat it with the Linkstation.

Thanks for all of the help.

I tried another drive but that did not help but I just tried loging into the HS-DH500GL from a different computer and was able to get to the backup job page.  I am running a small backup now to see if it is really working.  Loging in from the other computer also let me change the network which I was unable to do on this computer.

A side question - how long should backups take?

Tom

The backup worked.  I do not understand why it works from one computer but not the other one.
