Buffalo Terastation Live 4.0 TB
« on: November 15, 2008, 07:25:40 PM »

I have a couple of 4.0tb terastation lives (4 x 1.0tb HDD) that I would like to upgrade to (4 x 1.5 tb HDD).  I recently purchased a Terastation live with 4 1.5tb drives built into it, but I would like to just replace the drives in my others myself.

My TS lives are all running Firmware 2.14.

I have read several opinions on this and have just walked away confused as to what the correct answer is here.

I get that it will void my warrenty, so I am not looking for advice or reminders of that.  I am more curious as to getting a straight answer of wether or not swapping out drives of larger capacity without having to reformat and delete will work.

One thread says you can swap out the drives one at a time, restructering the RIAD array after each replacement, and all should be fine as long as your TS is new. Will I lose data in this solution?

Other posts have said it will only build a small portion of the new drive size. (in this case only 1TB of the 1.37 TB available) Is this true?

Any help on this would be rgeatly appreciated.  Also, do all 4 drives have to be the same capacity?  Can you swap out one drive at 1.5 tb and leave the other 3 at 1tb without losing any thing?

Thanks so much in advance!

If you swap out all 4 drives for larger hard drives, then you will lose all of your data on the drive.  You can not do it and keep the data.  Also if you do you will need to follow the TFTP software directions.
